On keeping a zibaldone - L'Atelier Nomade

Do you know JOPLIN? It's a nice European alternative to apps like Evernote, Google Keep, Notion, Microsoft OneNote.

Joplin is a free, open source note-taking and to-do application, which can handle a large number of notes organised into notebooks. You can search your notes, copy them, tag them and modify them either from the app itself or from your own text editor. The notes are in Markdown format, which is great.

It was created by Laurent Cozic back in 2016 as an alternative to Evernote. It's cloud service is hosted in Paris, France. They focus on privacy, security and transparency.

It's open source and offline-first, so you can always access your data on the device, even when you're not connected to the internet.

It's got all the basics you'd expect, and you can also attach images, videos, audio files and PDFs to your notebooks.

There's a huge community of people who have made extra features possible with their plugins.

It's also super easy to export and import your files, which is great if you're worried about vendor lock-in.

The handy web clipper extension lets you save web pages or take screenshots in the browser and save them to your notes.

I think obsidian is great but it gives me an *UNREASONABLE AMOUNT OF ANXIETY* that it doesn't 'save' like a word doc or a text file would.

I keep hammering ctrl-s out of a lifetime of conditioning and when I remember it does nothing I start catastrophising about accidentally deleting everything and it getting autosaved.

I've got the vault in version control- but it's still *deeply upsetting*

If you have a graphics tablet, you must absolutely check out Rnote!

I've been using it for a few weeks on Linux and Mac (for work) and I've been enjoying using it.

Earlier, I used to use a notebook, but with a graphics tablet there's no need to hunch over a desk to write on paper. That used to cause me lower back pain. I can now lean back in my chair, tilt the tablet and write easily.

I never realized I could ge this excited about an app... Been sorting out my notes for days now in @obsidian.

This tickles me in the right place. Previously thought it's too much work and too many things to tune, but this was just what I needed.

Before blog post(s), I want once again share some of my excitement.

My "Second Brain" now works beautifully.

- Syncs with all 5 devices I actively use
- Commits changes to my GitHub repository in real time headlessly (cron on remote server) without having a git plugin installed
- Each hotkey is set up in a way I can use keyboard only
- Canvases are great addition to my workflow
- Graph and note connections makes me feel good
- This was a great way to prune old notes and keep an archive for those I want to save

Still 1876 notes unsorted, some dating back to 2008, but can't remember the time when I enjoyed something this much!

I have decided to move on to @obsidian from Craft and Simplenote. It takes a long time to get through all my 5000 notes but I'm willing to do it. I imported all my notes from those apps to Obsidian.

There are 1902 plugins for Obsidian and with them the customization options are endless! At the same time I'm in love and horrified. I'm going to nerd out from this.

Why did I make the move:

1. Own your data - I already self host a lot, social media (Mastodon), chat (Matrix), code... why not notes as well? There is certain appeal in having your notes to yourself all the time instead of a walled garden. I love seeing my note changes in git diffs.

2. Options. I don't have to use Obsidian if I don't want to, I can open the note file with any editor I like and it still keeps in sync if I decide to use Obsidian on other device to further view or edit the note.

3. Performance. Having notes locally available at all times makes the app really fast. Like it should be. Notes should not load up forever. On Craft I had even difficulties removing notes. I grow old watching those loading bars...

4. Offline notes. Notes should be alaways available on airplane or train tunnel or whenever you need, without Wifi. With Obsidian this is possible.

5. All the bells and whistles. It's really nice to be able to visually see your notes in a "brain graph". I really love this view.

6. Security. Neither Simplenote or Craft have E2EE or other security features. Obsidian does.

7. Endless canvas and mind mapping in the same note app. I really didn't think I needed this, but it's awesome.
