One of the things I'd like to do in 2025 is leave #Notion for a local-first and open source personal knowledge base/note taking app.
Right now, I'm considering two options...
hello! i’m @crashmoney, and here is a little intro to my corner of the internet:
- primarily a writer, musician, reader, learner
- dabbling in coding and command-line interfaces
- interested in personal knowledge management, especially using @obsidian
i’ll be sharing mainly thoughts here – on books, on writing, on music (usually under #NowPlaying ), of the shower variety and everything in between.
you can find more longform content on my (slowly-reviving) site https://ever-going-journey.pages.dev :]

I decided to stop worrying and just use #logseq. Sometimes I worry about its sustainability and alleged “data loss” issues but honestly it’s just the best note taking app for me. I can’t imagine using anything else like I use Logseq.
#obsidianmd is of course a very close second place, along with Capacities.
Started messing with #Capacities again… Honestly, it has always been the PKM tool that made the most sense to me. It has a lot of great features that make it nearly perfect for the way that I like to do things:
- Daily notes being an integral part of the note taking experience.
- Cross-device syncing.
- “Objects” as the atomic unit.
- A great UI/UX. Visually appealing but functional and useful.
- tags applied on entire pages or just on specific blocks
- an outliner style bullet notes functionality
There are still pain points (it’s not great at task management, for example) but overall Capacities was soooo important to me during my semesters last school year.
I’d like to give it a try to capture notes from my personal life and my stream stuff too.
What note taking/GTD tools are worth taking a look at in 2024? #PKM #personalknowledgemanagement #pkmapps #NoteTakingApp #notetaking
I don’t understand the criticism of #Obsidian as “just a wiki”. I don’t think I’m enough of a nerd to understand what this means.
Someone pls I literally cannot decide between #Logseq and #obsidianmd.
I love Logseq’s simplicity, focus, and opinionated design (emphasis on daily notes, tags, no folders, queries).
But I love the versatility of Obsidian (although I’ve basically had to use a ton of plugins to make it have functionality similar to Logseq).
I just heard that Logseq runs worse, and that its data doesn’t import cleanly due to the nature of it being an outliner.
Idk I just feel conflicted. Should I just stick with Logseq or what
Ngl im kinda missing Logseq… Obsidian is rly rly good, and vastly superior to Logseq in some ways (sync is more reliable, plugin support on mobile, custom themes on mobile, etc.) but I’m still sooooo attached to the UI and experience of using Logseq.
Okay, now that I’ve taken time to really try to understand the philosophy behind Obsidian, I’ve come to realize that I like it quite a bit.
Obsidian sync is so much more reliable than Logseq sync, and faster. I can type immediately upon launching the app (desktop & iOS), unlike on Logseq where, sometimes entire bullet points that I’ve written disappear because I didn’t wait for the sync indicator to show that it’s ready.
It’s also a lot less opinionated, has mobile theme & plugin support, etc.
I’ve been able to make Obsidian work exactly as I want it and I’m quite happy with that.
There are still certain things that Logseq does incredibly well out-of-the-box (like task management) but overall I’m excited to keep using Obsidian!
I tried using Amplenote and my ass didn’t understand a thing LOL #pkm #personalknowledgemanagement #Amplenote #notetaking #notetakingapps
I decided to ditch Tana and go back Logseq.
Although the experience of using Tana is so delightful, it’s in a proprietary format and online-only. It’s really important to me to have my notes in a format that is easily transferable from one app to another, and always on my drive.
Hello #PKM friends!
I uh... ended up leaving Logseq again. I LOVE the extensibility of outliners, and I think that both Logseq and Obsidian are powerful beyond belief.
That said, I've kind of discovered that I'm a visual learner.
I gave Milanote a try and it changed everything I thought about the way that I want to do personal knowledge management. I LOVE mind-maps, holy heck... I've been using it for my creative projects and it's been doing wonders for me.
I didn't want to give up the traditional note taking experience though... That's when I found AFFiNE. Note taking and visual whiteboarding/"infinite canvas" all in one? It's too good!!!
It's got quite a few bugs at this stage, but it's open source, local-first, and suits my needs.
Hello Fedi, I am trapped in a never ending hell of productivity/personal knowledge management apps.
I’ve tried: Logseq, Capacities, Anytype, Twos, Superlist, Todoist, Notion
I now want to try: Milanote & Affine Pro.
I was VERY IMPRESSED using Milanote on a recent creative brainstorm, and Affine Pro seems to have the same functionalities in its “edgeless mode”.
I just came back to Logseq too… Am I really going to move AGAIN? Noooo…
At least Affine Pro is open-sourced, free, and local-first. That is a HUGE boon that places it above most, for me.
Logseq is the same way. But I’m struggling to organize my Logseq in a way that works for me.
Anyone got any experience with Affine or Milanote?
I would use Anytype more but, like… the search capabilities are severely lacking. Tags are basically useless and I hate that they’re rigid and only apply to a single “Relation”, so you can have multiple tags sharing the same name.
This is a big reason why I’ve been using Capacities.io going forward. I feel like it really works for how I like to organize things and it’s been a blast to use. They say they’re working on full offline capability so I’m excited for that.
okay, finally started a little public knowledge base #digitalgarden here at https://garden.birdcat.cafe ! you can check out the source code and workflow for the logseq directory i'm working in here: https://github.com/TacoWolf/garden
PRs/Issues on the content are welcome! this is part of my #thinkinginpublic project, where i'm taking notes on how things work for personal reference AND for public reference at the same time. :3

What Makes Obsidian.md The One (Notes App) for Me?
I eventually chose Obsidian.md as my note taking application, and I love it. I just need to get to work on giving my vault a bit of a tidy up!
