Starting My DeGoogle Journey!
I’ve decided to move away from Big Tech and focus on privacy. I’m currently loving @ProtonMail, Proton VPN, and Proton Drive—their commitment to privacy is outstanding.
I’m also making a conscious effort to use more EU-based software to avoid reliance on Big Tech and US companies.
Anyone else on this journey? What EU-based tools are you using?
I was a bit slow on this one, but I finally disabled Google Maps on my phone! I've been using Organic Maps (https://organicmaps.app/) for a little while now and I've had a great experience. I just have two issues:
1) Unless I download Organic Maps from the Google Play Store, I can't use it with Android Auto when I'm in a car. I want to disconnect from Google, so this is not ideal.
2) It seems like @organicmaps is the official Mastodon account, but they don't have their website verified.
It only took a few minutes to copy the places I had saved on Google Maps into a note in #Fossify Notes (https://www.fossify.org/). As usual, I'm finding that plain text notes are exactly what I need and give me a better experience than these bloated corporate apps.
IT’S HAPPENING!
France and Germany are the bullwarks of the EU. how they go, so does the rest of the union. #degoogle needed to happen 20 years ago, after the Brazil/Microsoft incident.
❝ Govs Open Source.
You can easily self-hosted Docs … Docs is the result of a joint effort lead by the French (DINUM) and German
governments (ZenDiS). We are always looking for new public partners (we are currently onboarding the Netherlands
). Feel free to reach out ❞
I miss the times when #Google seemed kinda cool. There are many things in the web today that seem cool, but how will they end up?
This is day 38 of #100DaysToOffload
Tyypit hei.
Kertokaa mulle, miten on järkevää toimia kun vaihtaa sekä ison G:n autentikointisovelluksen toiseen (#FOSS) että sähköpostiosoitteen palveluihin, joissa toi 2-vaiheinen on käytössä. Et mitä pitäis tämmösen perusdummyn ottaa huomioon?
Onko ainoa vaihtoehto ottaa toi varmennus pois siksi aikaa ku tekee muutokset vai mitä APUA #degoogle
Adventurers, I need help!
My old mind doesn't want to remember what other DeGoogled ROMs are available for an Android phone.
I remember /e/OS from Murena and then...blank.
Could you help me remember?
If you feel like it, a brief review would be greatly appreciated but isn't mandatory
Thank you!
...and here it is. I've completely ditched Meta and am now on a journey to de-Google my life as well. I feel so relieved!!! The online environment there was just too toxic. It's challenging to avoid all billionaire big tech companies, but I'm glad I chose Mastodon (and Cara) over the alternatives. Next on my list: deleting my PayPal account and updating my email across all the forums I'm part of.
A practical guide to de-googling

Yet another step in my #degoogle path where I need some #help: Android TV.
Use case: I have a non-smart TV that I plan to use but not as my main TV. I want to make it smart, but as budget as possible*.
Any Android TV** stick that is not Google nor Amazon, is cheap and works nicely***?
I basically want to use two apps: Plex and SmartTube.
---
*Searching I only find big boxes over 200eur, not what I would like.
**Should there be another OS, I am all ears.
***No need top perfomance, but I have seen some WebOS in top TVs being sooooo slow... I'd just like something that does not put me on my nerves :D
Speaking of de-Googling, what are people doing with their Google Voice numbers?
I don't wanna get rid of the number because I've had it since I moved to Indy 15+ years ago. I got it because I wanted a 317 number without having to change my primary line (812).
I suppose I could transfer it to my cellular provider and add it as a second line (e-sim) on my phone... though that'd probably cost me more than I'd necessarily like to pay for just a secondary line... but an option at least.
Question to the #android #privacy #degoogle folks:
Are there any low-price devices out there that are reliably getting releases of a de-googled Android? #grapheneos only supports pixels, last time I looked #calyxos also only supported devices from the higher price range. Not sure what else there is out there. Being bitten by LineageOS ending support multiple times I would like to avoid that...
Asking because lots of older family members are using low-price devices (100-200€) and can't afford a pixel or similar (even if it lasts several years longer). Same with kids in the family, where the devices are not handled like I want a 600€ telephone to be handled :-)
De-google-ify Internet
Amazing campaign by the French not-for-profit association Framasoft.
The De-google-ify Internet project offers 26 ethical and alternative online tools that may be used by everyone.
They build open source alternatives to many Google services like Youtube, Agenda, Docs, Forms, Maps etc, as well other services to replace Doodle, Facebook Event, Github, Zoom, Slack and much more!
Check their beautiful website, watch the videos to know more about their work and follow them here in Mastodon:
Have you already switched your Gmail to a new e-mail provider?
If no, what are you waiting for?
If yes, which one? Was it difficult to migrate? Do you like the design of your new providers interface? Do you find it easy to use? Are you happy with it?
Tell us more about your experience!
I'm prepping to convert to GrapheOS probably by the end of this week. For those of you who have made the transition:
1. What are some of the lessons learned from your experience in converting over to GraphenOS?
2. If you could go back and reinstall GrapheneOS again, would you have done anything differently?
