Sharing my March reading list! Work picked up and it's been getting warmer (meaning more time outside) so I've been reading a little less. I managed to get through:
Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds
Those Beyond the Wall - Micaiah Johnson
Careless People - Sarah Wynn-Williams
Obviously one of these is not like the others! Of the two sci-fi novels, Those Beyond the Wall is easily my favorite. Gritty and dystopian, it felt very Mad Max-esque. Revelation Space was also great, but not quite to my taste. It dragged on a bit in places but also jumped between characters just a tad too quickly. Still a solid story and very interesting settings and characters though.
Careless People, of course, is a factual dystopian story, which is, uh, not ideal. I've never worked for Facebook (and in fact have turned down job offers from them) but I *still* feel dirty just for being in an adjacent industry. Chilling stuff.

Today in Labor History March 25, 1931: The authorities arrested the Scottsboro Boys in Alabama and charged them with rape. The Scottsboro Boys were nine African American youths, ages 13 to 20, falsely accused of raping two white women. A lynch mob tried to murder them before they had even been indicted. All-white juries convicted each of them. Several judges gave death sentences, a common practice in Alabama at the time for black men convicted of raping white women. The Communist Party and the NAACP fought to get the cases appealed and retried. Finally, after numerous retrials and years in harsh prisons, four of the Scottsboro Boys were acquitted and released. The other five were got sentences ranging from 75 years to death. All were released or escaped by 1946. Poet and playwright Langston Hughes wrote it in his work Scottsboro Limited. And Richard Wright's 1940 novel Native Son was influenced by the case.

The latest chapter in my novel Songbird features Great Marlborough Street and the Marlborough Street Magistrates Court (pictured, Wikipedia), which has played host to a number of famous people over the years including Oscar Wilde, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Johnny Rotten and Christine Keeler. Charles Dickens also worked there, as a reporter.

Hard to Be a God by Arkadi Strugatski, 1974
This 1963 masterpiece is widely considered one of the best novels of the greatest Russian writers of science fiction. It tells the story of Don Rumata, who is sent from Earth to the medieval kingdom of Arkanar with instructions to observe and to save what he can.
Time to share my February reading list! This is a lot lighter than January, mostly because work has picked back up. Again, all science fiction, because that's what my brain likes.

Watts is one of my favorite writers, and Blindsight and Echopraxia are probably my two favorite works of his.
I loved the Revenger series by Reynolds, but I'm struggling with Revelation Space. It's excellent work but I feel like it jumps back and forth between the various characters a bit too quickly.
What #books is everyone else reading? Doesn't have to be science fiction!
