Buffy Leigh (she/they)<p>Just finished reading Ædnan by Sámi-Swedish writer Linnea Axelsson (translated by Saskia Vogel), an epic novel in verse that follows two Sámi families over a century, depicting the changes and trauma these Indigenous people have had to deal with. I very highly recommend it. MDMRN<p>I don't really know what else to say.</p><p>It's a lot. I'm glad I read it. I'm letting my Mother, who rarely if ever read comic books, borrow it. MDMRN<p>Maus uses anthropomorphized mice to represent Jewish characters, pigs for Poles, cats for the Germans, and so on. It is very effective at getting the point across, but it has its flaws and potential issues as well. </p><p>I'm glad I read it. </p><p>My Dad's family are Eastern European Jews. They fled from Poland and what is now either Ukraine or Belarus (family is not sure) when pogroms were sweeping across Eastern Europe. They fled a generation before the Holocaust, fleeing a different attempt to exterminate ethnically Jewish people. </p><p>I don't know, this hit me weird emotionally. vga256<p>13 years ago, my wife at the time and i were going through a rough period. we decided to hit the reset button on our marriage by driving south with no particular plan or destination. just two weeks away from home to get our bearings, and spend some time with each other.</p><p>along that two week drive, we stopped at every used bookstore we stumbled upon along our route through montana, idaho, washington, and arizona.</p><p>we ended up getting as far as Nogales, Mexico before turning around at the border crossing and heading home.</p><p>the best of the bookstores was found on our very last stop before crossing the US-Can border, in Butte, Montana.</p><p>Second Edition Books didn't look like much from the outside - a long brick and stucco building, painted over with a vile shade of pepto bismol. a little crate of old books propping open the door promised a treasure trove inside.</p><p>a treasure trove it was. you always know a bookstore is going to be great when they've run out of books on the shelves, and start piling them on the floors in the aisles.</p><p>it was the end of the trip - my wife was sick of me, she was eager to get home, anticipating the divorce that would come two weeks later</p><p>i spent two hours walking every aisle and shelf in that store, looking for the perfect memento mori.</p><p>i found it crammed in a barely-visited corner of the room, devoted to the history of California: a 1929 edition of The Gold Hunters by J.D. MDMRN<p>New Read - Maus (Series)</p><p>Phew, this book is heavy. For those who don't know, Maus is a book by Art Spiegelman. The book follows as Spiegelman, over a number of years, interviews and chronicles stories his father told him about his experience prior to and during the Holocaust. His father was a Polish Jew and ultimately ended up, along with his wife, in Auschwitz.</p><p>The book is raw and unfiltered. Zivan - Childless Cat Guy<p>I've reread: In the Company of Ogres by A. Lee Martinez</p><p>In the Company of Ogres takes some strange twists and turns. Every time I thought I knew which kind of story this is it took a twist and turned into something else.</p><p>We start with Demonic Accountants running the place, continue with a black sheep last chance Cinderella story move to a bit too much teenage love triangle and end up with cosmic forces at work.</p><p>But the best thing about Martinez is that he is funny, and Ogres is first and foremost a satire of fantasy tropes. My favorite moment was a game of Real D&D played by Ogres, goblins, orcs, and so on... playing as other D&D character types. </p><p>And how can you not love a story about a character called: Never Dead Ned. </p><p>Sadly fore some reason this is the only A.
