#Twitch announced they are going to be deleting highlights down to the most viewed 100 hours of video for every #streamer in a few months time. Twitch has not provided any kind of useful tooling for creators to migrate their content off the platform, but yt-dlp can be used as a stopgap to help archive your highlight videos locally. For example,

yt-dlp --format 'bestvideo+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/bestvideo+bestaudio/best' --merge-output-format mkv https://www.twitch.tv/<user>/videos?filter=highlights

This will download all highlights from <user> consecutively and save them as .mkv files, but it is still far from practical for more extensive sets of highlights.

Many people make use of highlights for archiving their streams so they are not simply lost when they are done, and it threatens to erase a lot of Twitch history including not only gaming but also videos from artists, musicians and many others. This is particularly the case in #SpeedRunning communities that use Twitch highlights for keeping verifiable records of runs and anything reposted would need to be re-verified.

Twitch claims this impacts only some 0.5% of users but the methodology for that statistic is at best suspect when it comes to long term active streamers. While I personally don’t have a massive amount of hours of highlights, I do use them for refining and sharing clipped moments as well as for building compilations to share.

It’s pretty concerning that large swathes of online history are being erased on various platforms (YouTube, imgur, etc) including from those people who are no longer with us or simply can’t archive elsewhere.

Is there some kind of file #storage that does delta compression? I'd love to have a file #archive with

• revisions (i.e. changes to files are tracked)
• deduplication (identical files only take up space once)
• deltas (small changes to large files only take up the size of the difference)

Git would cover this, but doesn't work well with TBs of data. Backup software with delta support like Borg or restic can do it too, but have bad UX for tracking file revisions.

in the 90s, finding any kind of gaming news in canada was nearly impossible unless you could afford to buy gaming mags. there was no canadian equivalent of TechTV or G4... that was, until Electric Playground - produced in Toronto - was launched in 97. EP was a fantastic weekly gaming show, and it was broadcast on public tv so peasants like me could watch it without cable. it disappeared from the airwaves in 2015.

last year, it was quietly announced that EP had donated its entire 10,000+ episode archive to the U of T Mississauga's special collections library.

i noticed that they've recently started posting episodes from seasons 1-3, so i assume that means the U of T archival team has been digitizing old tapes. the quality is fantastic. watch here, and always archivable at home using `yt-dlp <url>`:

web.archive.org doesn't work on some exotic frontends (basically anything that isn't Akkoma-based or a fork from Mastodon) so it's not really a solution.

I could use https://mastopoet.raikas.dev/ (which transforms a toot into a fancy screenshot) plus some alt-text, but I don't really like the idea of using an image where text would be enough.

A certain #doujin #musician —who wishes to remain anonymous— authored at least 31 musical works (mostly #Touhou #arrange works, but also one #YumeNikki #cover) between 2017 & 2023. He quit on November 6, 2023 & deleted his two known social links (#SoundCloud & #YouTube), citing ① lack of motivation resulting mostly from his #music on SoundCloud being only favorited by #spambots (& almost no reception from real human beings) & ② inability to handle the pressure putting on himself when facing lack of progress. Even though he also quoted a video saying "it's difficult to do anything creative at all while being in so much stress" due to the ongoing #Russia #Ukraine war, he assured this was "not what's made me quit".

With his utmost permission, I set up a Mega.nz #archival #repository of all of his works as he delivered them to me via #Discord after his account deletions, with the following conditions:
