From my #Asheville county government
"This is an important update regarding wildfire activity currently affecting #Buncombe County. Due to recent weather conditions the risk of wildfires has increased significantly in our area.
Currently, there is a 2 acre wildfire in the Dix Creek / Leicester area of Buncombe County. Crews are on scene and the public is asked to avoid the area.
We urge all residents to remain vigilant and take immediate precautions to protect lives and property. "
#Energiewende-Desaster: Fehlender #Wind offenbart das große Problem
Bloomberg-Energieexperte Javier Blas schrieb: Die #Dunkelflaute hält an.

Over half of US states get more electricity from #cleanenergy than coal.
28 states total, including:
Oklahoma
Kansas
South Dakota
Coal is the worst #fossilfuel for environment (and public health). 20 years ago, over half of US electricity came from coal.
Once again: clean energy investment and policy helps red states, too.

At 09:09 this morning I decided it was a good time to take advantage of what the #wind had done overnight. A lot of #duckweed had accumulated in one of the bays in the #lake
visible from out lounge window.
With the aid of a angler's net attached to a long pole and a rake I managed to make a good stab of removing the weed along with some sludge and twigs found on the bed of the lake. It's now in a number of piles on the bank. I'll give it a day or two to allow #invertebrates to crawl back into the water and then move the piles to the #compost bins.
Dust storm and many wind driven fires in the southwest US. Same song, 22nd verse.
One fire is about a half hour drive from me:

"Emergency personnel were juggling road closures due to dust storms and high winds—San Augustin Pass, just east of Las Cruces, reported a gust at 93 mph.
US Highway 54 was briefly closed from the southern Otero County line near El Paso to the northern Otero County and Lincoln County lines due to high winds, blowing dust and vehicle wrecks. Crews could be heard over the radio leaving an accident on Highway 54 to head towards the Mayhill-adjacent fire.
The Otero County Electric Cooperative (OCEC) reported dozens of outages affecting thousands of customers from Timberon to Carrizozo. Line crews are working on restoring power to the affected areas."

The winds are ridiculous today. Mountain waves are one of my least favorite weather phenomena.
Today's dust storm activity is strongest over the Big Bend region of Texas, and northeast Chihuahua in Mexico.
Smoke plumes from several fires in Chihuahua and south-central Texas are also visible.

Er... your big rig is NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT
The Friday, 14 March, dust storm started before sunrise in New Mexico and kept racing east through the Texas Panhandle, then farther north into Oklahoma and Kansas.
[Edit/add: many grass/wildfires being driven by the wind. Thousands of acres burned in a matter of a few hours. https://app.watchduty.org/i/43769 ]
The Oklahoman: Oklahoma firefighters have responded to dozens of wildfires on Friday caused by high wind from a historic weather system that led to fast-moving, dangerous fires.
The wildfire threat will continue into the weekend.
The powerful low-pressure system racing across the United States reached the central plains on Friday, bringing heavy winds gusting up to 60 to 70 mph to Oklahoma, which created a critical-to-extreme risk of wildfire, the National Weather Service said.
Wonder why wind, storage & other climate techs matter in the current climate?
Here's a live view of Texas's electricity mix: wind tops the list, energy storage plays a key role. The second biggest source: solar. (There's a CKI deep-dive for solar, too.)
Wind, solar & batteries don't dominate Texas's grid because of state-level policies & regulations. Quite the opposite.

Lots more to say, primarily that it's great to see Columbia Business School's Climate Knowledge Initiative in full swing.
Milestone: 51% of all electricity produced in the Netherlands last year was from renewables! In 2015, it was only ~12%.
Nuclear's share last year was 3%, leaving 46% for fossil generation (mostly gas).
