"Pointing to ultra-dry conditions and strong winds that have worsened the damage, Lee Han-kyung, disaster and safety division chief, said: “This wildfire has once again exposed the harsh reality of a climate crisis unlike anything we’ve experienced before.”
The #wildfires originated in Uiseong and have been moving rapidly eastward, spreading almost to the coast, carried by gusty winds and with dry conditions aggravating the situation."

'Higher temperatures amplified by human-caused climate change contributed to the existing seasonally dry conditions, "turning dry landscapes into dangerous fire fuel" in the region, the Climate Central group, an independent body made up of scientists and researchers, said in a report.'
'Wildfires raging in South Korea doubled in size on Thursday from a day earlier, as authorities called the blazes the country's worst natural fire disaster with at least 26 people killed and historic temples incinerated.'

Here is a screencap from a video someone took from the SW region outside of #Asheville.
The fires are closer and you can see the glow at night. The smoke is much worse as well.
This is the #Buncombe County fire near Leicester at Dix Creek.
We're up to 7 fires now in the area: 3 in Polk (longest-term) 1 each in Swain, Jackson, Haywood and Buncombe counties.
The winds here SW of #Asheville have dropped, and the smoke is now settling in. My outdoor sensor jumped from 4 to 29 for PM2.5
This may affect our plans to finally go for a hike tomorrow morning.

"The Uiseong fire, only 68% contained and exacerbated by gusty winds, showed "unimaginable" scale and speed, said Lee Byung-doo, a forest disaster expert at the National Institute of Forest Science.
#ClimateChange is projected to make wildfires more frequent globally, Lee said."
