Spring fever. After a relatively rough winter, things are warming up and the forest is humming with tree frogs, wood frogs, and spring peeps. Ramps (Allium tricoccum) are starting to emerge in our ramp beds. And we've set up a bee hive. My first snake sighting in the Year of the Snake 2025, and it's a beauty. The Blue Malaysian Coral Snake (Calliophis bivirgatus), spotted at Thomson Nature Park on 23 Feb 2025. A highly venomous snake, this one was quite calm and not bothered by the crowd watching it (it did not raise its tail as a warning). After spending some time on the walking path, it went back into the forest.

What makes an animal a pest, vs. a potential pet? Atlas Obscura's Andrew Coletti spoke with science journalist Bethany Brookshire, who has written a book about the subject, to find out. "India has way more venomous snakes than the U.S. does, and yet people there are not as utterly terrified, screaming 'Go chop its head off with a hoe!' about snakes [like Americans do]," says Brookshire.
