marqle<p>It's weird what grabs the attention and what doesn't.</p><p>I was looking up some UK <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/statistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>statistics</span></a> and it looks like the most dangerous thing our sons do is drive a car.</p><p>Over 78% of all car fatalities are male and that's even higher in the younger groups.</p><p>Strangely, that's not why men's insurance is higher. That's mostly because men are more likely to make a claim. </p><p>Apparently women cause more accidents per capita in the <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a>, which is a very odd geographical difference if you ask me.</p><p>These are the kinds of discrepancies that make me suspicious of <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/social" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>social</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/research" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>research</span></a></p><p>Someone must be getting this wrong, surely. <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/american" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>american</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a> can't be worse <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/drivers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>drivers</span></a> than their <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/British" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>British</span></a> counterparts, can they?</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/cars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cars</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/driving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>driving</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/roads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>roads</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/insurance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insurance</span></a></p>

Has it, Grauniad? Has it really? You do know that change is much smaller than the typical revisions of monthly figures, which is why almost all other countries oy publish quarterly figures? Even the quarterly figures change about 0.4%, with monthlies getting revised up to 1.0%, since they are based on only half the data.
And that's assuming that GDP is a such a useful and accurate figure that it makes sense to state to such fine precision.

Fierce new blizzards last night threatened to block all roads to the West Country. They followed a day in which widespread snowfalls, six inches deep, brought fresh chaos to the roads in many areas. Road conditions are described as bad to worse to appalling.
