The PDA was a class of device we've left behind that I think now more than ever is something we need to revisit. it's a simple fact that cellular networks spy on you heavily, and at this point just physically carrying one can be a security issue if your location is sensitive. we also at this point know that being constantly connected can have a negative impact on your mental health.
So, why not bring back the class of device that you can carry with you, but isn't always connected? especially now, in the year of our lord 2025, when you can just go buy a storage device that can hold 2 terabytes of data and fits on your fingernail. the old school workflow of downloading what you want when you're connected, and then working with that data offline in between syncs, is more viable than ever. #offpunk has been proving this to me. email clients still do this sort of functionality. why don't we extend this out? an offline client for mastodon would be a great step in that direction.

Dear #python and #unix hackers,

I’m trying to find out, in Python, if "grep" has the option "--color=auto" or not.

(to make #offpunk compatible with #openbsd grep )

Any suggestion? (the one on the mailing-list doesn’t work for me)

I could simply scan "grep --help" for the option but, intuitively, I don’t like it.

I’m really happy that @pluralistic is talking about RSS. We need more RSS.

In my own case, I just like to say that I don’t even try to read the main page of blogs and news websites.

I simply open the RSS feed with #offpunk to see the latest posts.

For nerds like me, you RSS feed *is* the real homepage of your website.

I need help with #git

A contributor to #offpunk is trying to send me a beautiful patch but it always fails when applied with "git am". I don’t understand why it fails. Everything is perfect.

If the contributor remove the failing part from the patch, the patch fails in another part. (as witnessed with --reject)

I’m completely loss here.

I really need help. Reboost from git or #sourcehut users are appreciated.
