Delicate Arch in the Clouds
Arches National Monument, UT

I was having knee problems at the time and was unable to hike up to the arch. I drove a ways out the 4WD trail beyond the parking area and was able to get this photo using my longest lens. I will also own up to cloning out a few human figures from the photo.

These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world's richest fossil beds. Ancient mammals such as the rhino, horse, and saber-toothed cat once roamed here. The park's 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today. And this is all true, but I think it is even more. It is a place where you can experience the beauty and peace of creation in an almost completely unspoiled way. The way to experience it more deeply like this is to stay in and around the park for an extended period of time. Stay in the park or in nearby Wall Drug then go into the park and go to a very quiet place and just be. Maybe walk silently and just see and feel the space. It feels like you might be very close to heaven. One very odd thing to know is that This park is very close to the Rosebud Indian reservation and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (Do you remember Wounded Knee). This is one of the poorest places in the entire country.
