Started watching yesterday Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, the fifty episode Gundam series absolutely nobody ever talks about. It's wild how not only does nobody in fandom ever talk about it, you don't even see the mechs show up in like, Build Fighters shows. It's also the show with the absolutely weird production history of starting out as a video game by Level 5, being written in part by their president, and all the characters look like they're from a Layton game.

It's kind of also wild how much the first few episode and change commit to being a beat for beat remake of the opening of original Gundam except for... wild-ass changes? The enemy is space robot dragons that don't talk but we still see infiltrating the colony like Char did in original Gundam, the main character is a genius elementary school student who designed the Gundam from plans his mother gave him and based on an oil painting of a Gundam in his house.

I don't like it so far, but I had fun discussing it with a friend so I'll probably keep watching it unless it gets so dire that we don't enjoy analyzing it.

(Also Gundam SEED had a similar issue of obsessively parroting the plot of original Gundam early on, although that eventually pivoted after episode 20 or so in absolutely wild directions.)

IT'S A GUNDAM (screening)!

Holy crow, they're showing all 3 of the Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 movies this month. First one on the 2nd of October!

The Japanese Blu-Ray releases looked sensational. Hopefully these are based on the restoration work done there.
