“So what does it mean to bike geographically? In some ways I think it's impossible to not bike geographically. Being on your bike is, by definition, geographic. In other ways, though, I think it requires reflection on the things one encounters during a ride.”

Well, I finally figured out one major thing about the *main* main setting of my story: what Earth climates are represented in [the Terran Belt] on [Planet B], which is basically a 100km wide belt of human urban and agricultural land on a formerly lifeless Earthlike planet.
…and basically, just imagine a straight-ish line being drawn from Neah Bay, US-WA to Maseru, LS-A, passing through/near places like Edmonton, CA-AB, Granada, ES-AN, and Pala, TD-MO. Not quite every climate, but climates ranging from tundra to desert to tropical rainforest.
Anyone here on the Fediverse is planning to attend one of the Geonight events?

"In a world where Apple Maps, Google Maps, and even Bing (yes, Bing) have bent the knee and rebranded the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, MapQuest has taken a different approach: pure, unfiltered chaos and hilarity. Introducing 'Name Your Own Gulf', the feature nobody asked for but everyone definitely needs."
Spacetime maps. Fun to play with, and offers some interesting points.

All maps are political—especially in #Israel and the Palestinian territories. Since 1948, governments and groups have waged 'map wars' to shape narratives favorable to their cause.

Gulf of Mexico is the one deadname you're allowed to use.
@GossiTheDog The pathetic joke currently known as the "United States of America" should be renamed "Dumbfuckistan". #USpol #USA #geography

In 1976, The New Yorker magazine published Saul Steinberg's famous cover meant to show the perspective on the world of the average person on 9th Ave in NYC. Its impact was immediate and still continues today, as it wasn't just a specific joke, but a lens by which you can portray the local perspective of anyone. In a paper publishing next month we look at Saul Steinberg's projection and how its a culmination of regionalism in geography.

Can Trump just order new names for Denali and the Gulf of Mexico? A geographer explains who decides what goes on the map - and why the Department of Interior just said yes: https://theconversation.com/can-trump-just-order-new-names-for-denali-and-the-gulf-of-mexico-a-geographer-explains-who-decides-what-goes-on-the-map-248112 #geography #cartography
