If you run a public server with special features such as extended post lengths, additional poll options, rich text etc, you might want to mention these in your server's description.

A lot of new people join big stock Mastodon servers and aren't sure about the differences between servers. Something very concrete like longer posts is a really good way of getting them thinking about moving.

It's not the only reason to move, but it's a good way to get their attention!

To follow on from yesterday's post, servers naturally see more of the Fediverse as their members follow accounts on other servers. If this is happening too slowly for you, there are also ways to more quickly increase the amount of accounts and posts your server can see:

Still seeing posts from server admins that say "boost this post to help my server federate". It's unclear where this idea comes from, as boosting posts does not do anything to help a server federate.

Servers do not connect to entire other servers, they only connect to specific accounts on other servers.

If you want your server to federate more, encourage your server's members to follow more people on other servers, and encourage people on other servers to follow your members.

Are you a club, co-operative, institution, business or other organisation that wants to run a Mastodon server?

If so, you might want to get to know the "roles" system in Mastodon's administrative tools. This is an extremely useful and flexible way of assigning titles and powers to staff on your server. It also includes an (optional) hierarchy which makes cases of disagreement easier to resolve.

Similar to the recent mastodon.social limiting, we've seen an uptick in spam bots from mastodon.world. As a result, we've limited the instance.

This again means that you'll only be able to see posts from those accounts that you already follow.

If you're running a Fediverse server, you don't have to keep growing forever!

Some of the most thoughtfully-run and well-moderated servers on the Fediverse close themselves to new members when they reach a sustainable size.

The Fediverse is also much safer in the long run if its members are spread out on many servers.

The Fediverse isn't a startup and there are no investors to worry about. The aim isn't to cash out or gain clout, but to build something humane and sustainable.

The "fedi chick" spams continue because spammers are signing up on Mastodon instances with instant signups available. If you're running a Mastodon instance, please switch signups to approval mode instead.

You can do this at Preferences > Administration > Server Settings > Registrations > Who can sign up, set it to "Approval required for signup" and "require a reason to join", then save changes.

If people keep getting spams from your instance, it may end up defederated.

Any advice for switching VPS while running a few Fedi services (Owncast, Peertube, GTS, gancio)?

If you care about what you're building, don't host your stuff with Hetzner. Don't trust them.

They will take you down without warning and won't answer your queries. For sure, they'll send you an invoice, tho.

Happened before with @Ursalzona and other fediverse servers, happened now with this Peertube instance, and it's best to avoid being their next victim.

Go host your stuff somewhere else. And keep your backup routines working.

If you're frustrated about remote Fediverse profiles looking blank even though they're not blank, I've made a feature request about this on the Mastodon Github:

TL:DR - If a remote profile is blank or outdated, a user could click a button to load the 5 latest posts.

The Masto devs have previously been concerned that backfilling would overwhelm servers, but 5 posts on request wouldn't seem to be too bad?
