I made a dress. I think that’s all I’ve got to say about it.
#sewing #dressmaking #tailoring
I’m following in the footsteps of my 3 x great grandmother Mary Hopkin. Mary was a dressmaker, a common occupation for unmarried women in the 1800s. Here are the occupations of her fellow villagers
Just back from a work trip. Got to wear a #weekendSewingClub creation… a cut-and-shut of a Burda magazine skirt, with the top half of a dress from another issue.
It’s shorter than I planned, to eke it out of a shortish length of this lovely, light grey and sky-blue check wool.
I like it in its own right, but it’s actually the wearable-muslin for the midi-length version I have planned for THE MOST decadent fabric I have ever bought… dark grey SCABAL herringbone.
I’ve made a start on the floral satin dress, but I’ve been taking it slow with long sleeps between, because I’m starting my new (old?) job tomorrow, so energy-budgets are tight! Mostly I’ve been cutting out, interfacing, stay-stitching the fluttery, fluid viscose, and (thankfully not many) darts.
Here’s the pattern photo, and the bodice front, to give you a flavour of how the floral will look.
Some midweek #sewing happened today… the beginning of a dress I cut out at the weekend. #dressmaking #handmade
Finally, my best #Yarnuary tip. If you're lucky enough to be bought an adjustable tailor's dummy for Christmas, make sure you take your measurements like I did, early on Boxing Day. You may be horrified at the time but now I feel smug knocking off a few centimetres without suffering too much dieting hell.
#weekendSewingClub catch-up
The shirt dress has buttons. Oh Lord, I ballsed up the buttonholes, especially on the cuffs, but who ever looks at those?
The picture of me wearing it is a better colour representation of this GLORIOUS fabric: looks nice, but it feels even more incredible.
Bit short. Probably one for opaque tights IRL. But I do like it.
#WeekendSewingClub confession… I lost all patience with the red silk dress, so I have put it aside and been making a very short shirt-dress. Looks like denim from a distance, but is actually the wool/silk blend houndstooth. Really lovely fabric to work with, and will be to wear. #sewing #dressmaking #handMade
Not at the #sewing stages this weekend, but I am finally tackling this blazer dress… with a few edits:
1. I’m going to have to split it with a waist seam. My hip measurement is a clear THREE dress sizes bigger than my waist measurement, which is way more than I want to grade out on the side seam. Cutting skirt and bodice separately let’s me distribute the difference across those twin front and back darts.
#WeekendSewingClub It’s a dress. It hasss #pockets.
My fabric is hanging. They are both a modal lycra blend, which I have never used before. I suspect shenanigans, will occur but I like how they feel after the wash.
Cross your fingers everyone. After I put these in the wash, I went looking for the notes on the pattern I drafted in May, for this project and I can't find them. I'm gonna wing it.
I'm gonna wing an untested pattern, with missing notes, using unfamiliar fabric. I'm boldly going for it.

#Introduction Hello, new followers! I'm currently writing my MA thesis on women in the Viennese #dressmaking trade ca. 1810-1850, and I talk about the writing progress a bit, using the hashtag #MArathon.
I'm a creative person who's into drawing and painting and all kinds of paper and textile #crafts, mainly #sewing. I love history and the detective work of research; I'm also interested in historical sewing.
I love #books and am an avid reader, my preferred genres are historical fiction, mystery, sci-fi and fantasy, also a little horror (ghost stories). Currently reading Star Trek TNG novels.
I enjoy baking and eating cake, occasionally. Last but not least, I like #nature, wildflowers and herbs, bees, rainy days and autumn, being at home and having tea.
I live with a black #rabbit named Marigold. She's a rescue and needs medical treatment due to her former living conditions, but is a happy and very affectionate bun. I post about her, her healing progress, and her shenanigans.

#MeMadeMay2023
I can't believe that I've made it to day 8 with no repeats but it's been a busy sewing year. This was the second dress I made at #dressmaking classes in #ViệtNam with #BaliBatik. It was a clone of the earlier dress and I especially like the back darts. And of course, #ItHasPockets! Sadly, the batik is shredding in a big way with multiple small holes and bigger rips so it will probably only be worn at home until it's indecent for eve that.

#WeekendSewingClub final update… it’s a black dress. There’s not much exciting about it and nothing at all innovative, and that’s okay! The fabric is lovely, it’s totally wearable, and the fit (which was most of the point) turned out really well…
#WeekendSewingClub finale… oh, alright, I like it more than I expected. A few harder-edged accessories and I’ll even probably wear it.
Really impressed myself with the fitting of the wrap-front. That’s the first time I’ve managed one with no trace of gaping (stay-stitching is a revelation)
Also, the inside is almost better than the outside… my grandma would’ve approved!
