The rain this morning ended just in time for me to take my #BromptonBicycle out to ride the North Shore Channel Trail, and I had enough time to ride the entire length for the first time. I found that the South end is only 1.2 miles from where the grandkids live. The section through #Skokie has a lengthy sculpture park. And I spotted where the channel flows into the North Branch of the #Chicago River to increase its flow for sanitary purposes.

Not sure what to think about the impact of current US politics on the cycling industry. With looming breakdown of democracy in large nations and tanking world economy, the impact on our favourite spare time activity should be least of our worries. But it still is one of the areas where one notices that politics matters. And one might feel especially connected to people working in the bicycle industry.

Wasn’t sure if I could manage day 3 of #30DaysOfBiking due to thunderstorms, but seized the moment when it stopped raining for a fast ride during lunchtime. Quickly biked to a great bakery downtown, a place we’d never visited before we started biking because driving downtown is awful & it’s a bit too far for a casual walk. Traffic was really light today bc most schools are closed due to weather & flash flood warnings. #BikeTooter
I just posted this at work and it seems like not everyone knows this.
You can take the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose or LA in the other direction, to the Monterey Bay aquarium. On Amtrak.com, simply put Monterey Bay Aquarium as your destination and when you arrive in Salinas station at 12:20pm (daily), there will be a bus that waits for you and picks you up to send you to the doors of the Aquarium by 1:30pm (usually takes just 20min)
For a true car-free experience, book a hotel room in New Monterey near the Aquarium, like the Clement Intercontinental, Monterey Plaza, or Wave Street Inn or anything on that side of the tunnel (including Pacific Grove). You can walk / bike the coastal trail.
Rent a bike from Work Horse bicycles downtown.
If you bring your own bike on the train (check in without boxing!) you can put it on MST city bus no 20, the bus station is 5 min ride away. Wait at and have a taco at Tacos Don Beto next door. There is a small outdoor area for Covid cautious folks.
