quick question: for e.g. my T480, the maximum specified and reported memory capacity is 32GB, but some people managed to install 64GB. (or 48GB for the vPRO models)

To see if this is only a thing affecting y device, I need a few more data points. If you own a T480 and run Linux, please run the following command and post your output below: sudo dmidecode -t memory | grep 'Maximum Capacity'.

Can anyone explain to me why and how it is possible to run more memory than supported and how to find out if that also applies to other devices?

Wow. My 6 year old Lenovo ThinkPad T480 got a new Firmware upgrade 1.52 today via fwupd. They actually published a new update after all that time Just a "fwupdmgr update" in Linux was enough to upgrade it.

I want to buy a #Thinkpad but not sure which model. I'd want at least 16gb ram, 256gb SSD and 1080 (full hd) screen.

There are some used #T480 here to buy, but also there are newer models like E14, but I think I prefer the old T series, I'll use just for general web browsing and watch series/movies with some lightweight #Linux, probably #Arch with #XFCE.

Any suggestions?
