Jan Mayen volcano (on a tiny island near Svalbard).

Not very active. The flow out of the volcano caldera is actually a glacier!

Big earthquake there this week. Apparently only itinerant scientists and expeditions to the island. Learned today it's a "mini continent" (ie not connected to any major continent, alone unto itself).

Sentinel-2 satellite 3/6/2025. #norway #svalbard #volcano

Only just discovered this had gone live, but as part of the launch of the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage recorded a short film of 'Summit', a poem arising from his visit to Svalbard last summer. He mentioned my etchings of Svalbard to the production team, and the etchings and sketches for them now form the backdrop to parts of the film: youtube.com/watch?v=9j3QL4m7Qd

(I wonder if this counts as an 'output' on my research grant?)

It was a summer of unrelenting #humidity & #heat too #extreme for the human body….In June, ≥1,300 pilgrims visiting the Muslim holy city of #Mecca died amid temperatures of 50°C (122°F).…125 people were reported dead in #Mexico during a July streak of exceedingly hot nights that researchers say was made 200X as likely because of #ClimateChange. In the #Arctic archipelago of #Svalbard, one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas, Aug #temperatures soared >2.5°C (4.5°F) above the record.

Considering a few days in #Svalbard next August. The Arctic has been calling to me for the last 25 years. (Shamed that I really have to fly there, which is rather shit.) When I’ve crossed the Arctic Circle I can lay my polar dreams to rest. Any recommendations for tours, guides, anything else near #Longyearbyen?
