Happy New Year and Happy Mapping in 2025!
I plan to boost some #introductions over the next few weeks. It's exciting to see a new wave and I hope that you enjoy the Fediverse!
In the meantime, I've been working on refining a recipe for relative elevation models (REMs) using Dan Coe's methods. My 2025 goal is to cover most of the #Virginia rivers, but we'll see.
Check out @FediTips for tips on how to use Masto.
My home town in the news again for the usual reasons, system racism.
In this latest episode a nurse at Henrico Doctor's is accused of beating newborns for the simple reason that they were born Black. They had seven newborns over the last few years with unexplained broken bones
Very eyebrow raising that courts are supposed to be open to the public yet they didn't allow media in at all(even without cameras) for this case.
The images below are a blend or average of all the forecast models; the European and UK models absolutely crush Virginia from Richmond north to D.C. with 6-12 inches (from south to north) but the GFS and a few other models are more conservative taking into account sleet/freezing rain particularly from Richmond to Lynchburg and Roanoke. Right now I think these numbers are reasonable (3.5" in #RVA, 5.5" in Harrisonburg, 7.5" in DC, 8" across much of Maryland). There's still room for these numbers to go up and we're just now getting into range of high resolution short-range models that will be able to help fine tune the forecast tomorrow. I do want to emphasize a risk of significant icing from Richmond to Lynchburg to Roanoke, down towards Galax, where ice totals could exceed a quarter inch. Precip will come to an end Monday evening from west to east and temperatures will drop into the 20s and teens Monday night and Tuesday morning so roads will be slick. #VAwx #MDwx
We are apparently the only people in #RVA that bring our own grocery bags to Food Lion. The cashiers there have no idea how to pack a bag that's not a disposible plastic bag. I just now automatically tell the cashier to leave the bagging to me.
Recently twelve Black men self immolated in a Virginia prison:
"Kevin Rashid Johnson reports that Econ, and his cellmate Trayvon Brown set themselves on fire, hoping to escape the intolerable racism, abuse, and inhumane conditions they were subjected to."
"These are not acts of protest. These are human beings driven to extreme lengths, simply hoping for relief from their torment."

So happy Richmond is implementing this project. Jefferson Avenue is primed and ready for more pedestrian activity, but the cars are a deterrant.

Freeze warning in effect for Hanover, Chesterfield, Powhatan, Goochland, Amelia, Nottoway and counties west; frost advisory for #RVA and counties east, through 8am Wednesday morning
My wife and I attended GalaxyCon / Nightmare Weekend in Richmond, VA yesterday and I returned home with some SciFi-geek life goals fulfilled. :-)
I met The Last Starfighter stars Lance Guest (Alex) and Catherine Mary Stewart (Maggie) with photos and autographs. Good times!
(Cathy is also in Night of the Comet, another dear favorite of mine from the eighties!)
I have been in Barcelona for nearly two weeks. The public transit here is next level. Their metro trains come so frequently the schedule board displays their estimated arrival time in SECONDS, not minutes. I have not once had to plan my day around train schedules — most come every three minutes, and even the regional trains run every 20 minutes.
It feels like every time I explore a non-American city I get angrier and angrier at my American city for its poor public transit. Richmond's flagship transit option, The Pulse, comes every 10 minutes during peak hours and doesn't even have a fully dedicated bus lane for its entire route. So it inevitably gets stuck in traffic, buses get delayed, and arrival times lose meaning.
Frankly, it's embarrassing. I love my home town, but seeing how other parts of the world live make it hard to love.
P.S. Grassy tram tracks are possibly the best form of transit I've seen yet.
Clusters of strong storms are ongoing over southwest Virginia from Blacksburg to near Danville north to Buena Vista; Lynchburg and South Boston will likely see storms in the next couple hours; things should stay fairly quiet for folks north of Charlottesville, and I have doubts these storms will hold together enough to reach #RVA.
I was recently appointed to Richmond's Public Utilities and Services Commission to help advocate for sensible policies that protect Richmond residents and keeps Richmond DPU accountable.
In service of good government and transparency, you can view my personal running notes for meetings here. I will update these every meeting. The next meeting is expected to happen in late August, and this is when I hope we'll really be able to start diving in.

I am more than happy to help you find answers to your burning questions about Richmond's utilities.
Probably will see a severe thunderstorm warning extended south and southeast again into #RVA or close to it, at least Lakeside, Tuckahoe, Mechanicsville. About to get really nasty in Glen Allen
Flood advisory for the next hour for #RVA from some gutter-flushers that came through in the last 40 minutes. Fairly quiet otherwise around the region, only other storms are out near Roanoke.
The VCU grads started a pro-Palestine march and headed to a rally instead.
Graduating students at VCU were seen walking out during Virginia governor Glenn Youngkinn's address to the class.
The protesting students made comments to the press indicating their strong disagreement with Glenn Youngkinn's goals to limit Black History curriciulium and general anti-Black and anti-Trans policy goals.

RVA E-Bikes e-bike rebates round 2 for Richmond public school teachers and city staff just went out!
As you can see, we're heavily oversubscribed - donations and recommendations to grants are greatly appreciated! https://ebikelibraryrva.org/rebates/
Gotta love it when it all comes together without even having planned it. This video shows using a custom config of https://mapswap.trailsta.sh to easily open up the https://overpass-ultra.us QA query for the @maprva sidewalk mapping project.
shout out to @jacobhall for spearheading the sidewalk mapping project & helping get the Tasking Manager grid into the QA query!
