New Zealand mountain gets same legal rights as a person
A settlement under which a New Zealand mountain has been granted the same legal right as a person has become law after years of negotiations.
"We must acknowledge the hurt that has been caused by past wrongs, so we can look to the future to support iwi[a #Māori tribe] to realise their own aspirations and opportunities," Paul Goldsmith, the government minister responsible for the negotiations, said.

The US public news show, #PBSNewsHour, had a good piece today on the current government of Aotearoa-NZ's attempts this year to roll back Māori rights, and the massive protests in opposition. It's good to see this story being covered in some depth internationally.
No wonder people are angry.

“Since coming to power in 2023, they (right-wing NZ govt) have dismantled a broad range of Māori initiatives, from the Māori Health Authority to school language programs.

But the most consequential reform is being championed by ACT leader David Seymour, who wants to redefine the interpretation of New Zealand's foundational document, the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi).”

NZ MP Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke, who was suspended for ripping up a controversial bill to reinterpret the 184-year-old founding treaty between #Māori and the crown, and leading a #haka in parliament.
Great photo floating around* showing just how large the demonstration was outside the New Zealand Parliament over white people maliciously attempting to reinterpret an almost 200-year-old treaty in their own favour and removing even more rights from Maori.
Oh, I found an article from Al Jazeera estimating 42,000 people in attendance.
Oh there we go. Fucking Libertarians being racist as usual.
❝
An estimated 42,000 people demonstrated on Tuesday, calling for lawmakers to reject the Treaty Principles Bill, which was introduced earlier this month by the libertarian ACT New Zealand party.

Protesters oppose a measure that would reshape the county's founding treaty between Indigenous Māori and the British Crown.
Appendix: One name by which Native Hawai'ians call themselves is Kānaka Maoli. Those of you with some awareness of East Asian languages might notice that the second word there is quite similar Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. That's not a coïncidence. Hawai'ians and Māori descend from the same ancestral population, and the same word underwent a common mutation as the populations diverged.
And the Māori traditional calendar is quite similar to the Hawaiian.
