I have all of my IoT devices restricted to the local network, but Google Home still works with them and I'm not entirely sure how. 
All of our Google Home devices are first generation which, as far as I know, don't have the capability to be hubs. I'm very confused.
I know I'm tremendously immature but also. Like. Google. c: Goooogle.

@SirTapTap@mastodon.socialNot too impressed with this Google Nest Camera btw, $80, video quality is about as good as my $30 Kasa devices and those allow 24/7 home recording to an SD card (not included) while Google wants a subscription for that of course
The only thing it really has over Kasa is...it shows up in the Google Home app, an oddly rare feature for smart camera for some reason. Glad I got it with store credit I was about to lose anyway.

This is all coming after I started building out my ZigBee network so that I'm less reliant on cloud-only services like Tuya. The #GoogleAssistant integration was a necessity because I swapped an old WiFi bulb out for a ZigBee one, removing it from #GoogleHome (which my wife uses). Then everything just kinda snowballed... #Tech
Finally got around to swapping some of my #GoogleHome third-party integrations out for my locally-hosted #HomeAssistant ones, namely Tuya for LocalTuya. I've also changed it so that my #GoogleNest devices talk directly to my HA server over LAN rather than jumping up to the cloud and back down (ignoring the cloud processing of voice-to-text which still has to happen). #Tech

I don't doubt the video quality is superior to my cheapo Kasa ones, and being able to see them *in the google home app* sounds really nice but...I'm not sure what could justify me paying the sub on TOP of already expensive cameras.
I mostly just use them to look at my cats

I just had the unfortunate experience of setting up two smart plugs in my home. It's not surprising that this is not mainstream.
- setting them up is hard
- getting 'routines' is hard
- swing up voice control is hard

@cassidy@blaede.familyA US federal judge invalidated two patents Sonos was using to suppress features from non-Sonos smart speakers (unless they paid Sonos' patent troll tax).
Regardless of your feelings about the other party (in this case, Google), I see this as a win for consumer tech and a loss for patent trolls.
Sonos can no longer hold the idea of speakers being in multiple groups as their sole intellectual property.
