Feral Strumpet<p>Spinning Frigg Vintage Fairytale Pin: A beautiful vintage brass pin of a woman with her distaff and spinning wheel. Coreyartus Imagery<p>Got this piece completed this morning. It’s a riff on “Jack & the Beanstalk”. </p><p>I tried some foil-looking thing for the leaves this time, and I don’t think it’s as effective here as it could be for something that really needs something shiny or sparkly—like Cinderella, maybe? Hm.</p><p>Anyway, it’s done! All me and Procreate—not a lick of AI involved at all. Hate the stuff.</p><p>I’m actually really really happy with it! This was a stretch for me, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned this last week is that stretching is important. Jürgen Hubert<p>Some musings on the upcoming <a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/SnowWhite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SnowWhite</span></a> movie:</p><p>Well, changing folk tales to suit new audiences is a well-established tradition, and something done by the Brothers Grimm themselves - so I can't fault <a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/Disney" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disney</span></a> for that.</p><p>However, I am getting tired of Disney</p><p>(a) retreading the same ground over and over again, and</p><p>(b) shoving all this pro-Monarchy propaganda down our throats. I am extremely leery of portrayals of monarchs as "good people", especially nowadays that people like the <a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/DarkEnlightenment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DarkEnlightenment</span></a> loons seem to actually gain major political influence.</p><p>Coincidentally, there are quite a few German folk tales about "good kings and emperors" who sleep beneath a mountain somewhere and would return in "Germany's hour of greatest need". This reflects the time these tales were written down in - after the Holy Roman Empire was shattered during the Napoleonic Wars at the start of the 19th century but before the Second German Empire arose in 1871. Some of these tales - and the books containing them - were very blatant propaganda pieces wishing for a "Great National Leader" to unite the nation. As they say, be careful what they wish for...</p><p>But there are many, many more tales about cruel, evil, and greedy local rulers - the kinds of nobles peasants would have had the most contact with. And many of them come to very bad end at the hands of the Devil who punishes them for their wicked deeds.</p><p>That modern fairy tale narratives mostly tend to focus on princes and princesses rather than plucky peasant heroes and heroines is a fairly modern trend. The protagonists need to be "special" thanks to their birth, rather than what they do. I'm really loving these images inspired by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and the Glasgow Four. I'm finally starting to feel a bit more confident in the process and torquing it toward my own sensibilities. I'm having so much fun!

These are 7 modernized fairy tales that differ in tone, some are contemporary and some futuristic.
Some are fantasy and some Sci-Fi. Some are darker than others.
The level of adherence to the fairy tale format also differs but they are all great in their own way and are rooted in compelling characters and relationships.
Each story has a different narrator to suit the main character and tone.
There's even a homage to Iain M. Banks, my second one this month.

Day 18 #ArtAdventCalendar: my #linocut of Slavic #fairytale Vasilisa the Beautiful with the skull lantern. Before her mother’s death, she gave Vasilisa a wooden doll & told her to keep it secret & with her always & whenever she needed help or comfort to offer the doll food & water & seek her help & the doll would provide. The doll helped her with her grief after her mother’s death.

#ArtAdventCalendar day 14: a print I made the 4th #FolktaleWeek2024 prompt trail. I thought of the fairytale Hans My Hedgehog, who knew all the right trails. I love the absurdity of a half-hedgehog man riding a rooster and playing the bagpipes.
His parents desperately wanted a child, and his father foolishly wished for “even a hedgehog”; his wife gives birth to a baby who’s hedgehog from the waist up.
