Just a little positive masking anecdote:
My spouse recently asked for a new mask. We use Cambridge Pro and he felt his was looking worse for wear and it needs to be nice for work. Since it was nearing the end of its protection anyway I ordered a new one.
My spouse is not immunocompromised. My spouse is not at high risk. Most of the time I'm not even sure my spouse would believe covid19 was a threat if not for seeing what it did to me.
But my spouse knows masks work because they've been working for us for over five years now. And now my spouse associates a nice looking, well functioning mask with work, which I think is a cool bonus for me.
Millions In The US Have Already Had A Case Of Covid This Year
Starting my own "Stone Lore" inspired by NK Jemisin. First seven are essentially the same.
Building from there.
1. A collapse will always come
2. All things change in a collapse
3. Beware the ground on loose rock. Beware hale strangers in a Collapse. Beware sudden silence.
4. Always remember what you are to yourself, & what you are to others.
5. The shake that passes will echo. The wave that recedes will come back. The mountain that rumbles will roar.
6. Breathe not the fine ashfall (PM2.5). Drink not the red water. Walk not upon warm soil.
7. Honor in safety. Survival under threat. Necessity is the only law.
8. The body fades. A leader who would last relies on more.
9. Honesty is risk. Duplicity is more dangerous. Vigilance is wisdom.
10. The stone that stands alone becomes furniture. The stone packed too tightly asphyxiates.
11. There is no mind without a body. There is no body without a mind. Both may fail.
12. Joy is a worthy aspiration. Surviving collapse is superordinate.
13. Those who seek mastery of & subjugation in any endeavor, but especially in matters of the Earth, are best observed warily from afar.
14. All humans are human. All humans are animal. All humans are of the Earth.
Earlier this month the XFL variant was defined, setting a new benchmark in SARS-CoV-2 evolution: a "quadruple-recombinant", meaning it’s evolutionary arc includes 3 recombinant ancestors.
It’s a stark example of how we are giving this virus every possible opportunity to evolve.
This diagram summarizes it’s evolutionary journey, which includes 3 ancestor recombinants and several other sub-lineages before XEC.18 and XEU recombined to form XFL.
A data modeller predicted last holiday's surge would be greater than summer, and every three weeks predicted the 2025 decline would end or reverse. He was wrong.
I want to support their goal of elevating awareness of the risks of #COVID19. We don't do that by spreading misinformation in the same way as COVID deniers. People won't listen to those of us sharing factual information if the louder voices in our community are constantly claiming risks that don't exist or never materialize. 3/3

This week's update of #COVID19 risks in the US is very brief:
- COVID is low and steady across the US
- This week's data could suggest a surge beginning in the South region
- A new national surge is not imminent, with no rise in the positive rate of testing evident
- Just one state, Louisiana, has high COVID viral activity (along with the District of Columbia)
I found another study that defies logic. The conclusion is this: "Long COVID after #COVID19 in children is uncommon."
Here are the findings: "At 1-3 months, the rate of persisting symptoms was 16.5% in patients with COVID-19, compared with 1.1% in patients with another respiratory virus infection. The rate of long COVID according to the CDC and WHO definitions were 20.4% and 13.0%, respectively."
How in the hell is that "uncommon"?!
I think it's great that we're seeing so many people concerned about measles. We should be--measles harms and kills people.
But we must stop being so bored by #COVID19 that we ignore the much more pressing health risks we face.
Scientists estimate that the US could see more than 850,000 cases, 170,000 hospitalizations, and 2,500 deaths over the next 25 YEARS.
So far THIS year, COVID is responsible for 12,538 deaths.
COVID is ~300x more deadly.
More than 50% of COVID-19 survivors experienced at least one PCC (Post-Covid-19 Condition) symptom up to 2 years after their initial infection.
The most common symptoms were dyspnea, fatigue, pain and depression, and the most common outcome was not returning to work.

@hosford42 @lucybeahere BTW, although I am only self-diagnosed as #autistic and presumably wouldn't be included in the registry as currently planned, I'm not taking much comfort from that. The level of hatred that calls us a plague 1000 times worse than #COVID19 could easily motivate an attempt to hunt down and exterminate ALL #autistics, formally diagnosed or not. Comparable to the hunt for Jews by the original #Nazis.
@hosford42 @lucybeahere Calling us #autistics a plague 1000 times worse than #COVID19 is more than just infuriating. It also shows how very much he HATES us. Enough to want to KILL US.
The crew at Aotearoa Covid Action have put out their own submission to the Royal Commission Inquiry into the #COVID19 Response in #Aotearoa
https://covidaction.nz/en/acasubmissiontophasetwoofthecovidinquiry
If you have the time and spoons for it, please make a submission. It can be as long as you like, or you can just write supporting ACA's submission.
It is important bc the cookers are going to be submitting and this whole "phase 2" exists to please the conspiracists.
Closes Apr 27

"What we saw in people with #longCOVID is they were burning 20, 30 percent more energy than someone that we would expect for their height, weight, gender and age," he said. "So even though we were asking them to sit very still and not use any energy at all, their bodies were working really, really hard to maintain that."

Hello, it’s the weekly #washingtonstate #kingcounty (that is, #seattle and environs) #COVID #COVID19 #wastewater toots.
A quick reminder that this King County respiratory disease data comes from Washington State, not the federal government.
Let's start with the West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant. Last week, the site reported the Sars-CoV2 7-day running average at 0, which was obviously some sort of error. We got a 0 reading earlier this week on 4/13 as well, but we have real data on 4/15. The prior 0 readings makes it look as if the levels went up, but the 4/15 reading is in line with the generally low numbers we’ve had for the last bit.
WSPT is one of three King County(-ish) sewersheds in this dataset. You can find overviews, individual sewershed results, and a breakdown of variants for the state wastewater surveillance program, along with other metrics like case counts and hospitalizations for Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses, at https://doh.wa.gov/data-and-statistical-reports/diseases-and-chronic-conditions/communicable-disease-surveillance-data/respiratory-illness-data-dashboard#WasteWater. If you go to the page and click "learn more" in the statewide view tab, you can find out lots of details about how these data are calculated and how to interpret them. The dashboard gets updated every Wednesday (generally). Reminder: the Department of Health is here on the fediweb, at @WADeptHealth
