Optimism: My dad, who was in the Navy, went to his first protest this Saturday (#HandsOff #5051movement). He had been protested against when in Vietnam and never cared much for them. But he went, and I didn't ask him to come. He wanted to be involved.
Pessimism: After standing for an hour on the street corner, we were told by organizers that it was over. We had thousands on ~20 different street corners, but no one came together to march and make it a real protest. My dad asked, "Do you think it did anything?" My answer had to be no. Protests should not follow scripts or rules.
@ienvision @RealJournalism I have to point out...the younger folks have been raising their voices. The older folks keep launching cops and ICE and "no, no, don't protest like that about THAT" rhetoric at them. My local organizers seem baffled that they can't auto-draw younger folks in. #HandsOff was designed to attract and activate exactly those who showed up. If the movement wants more demographics involved, it must make its own internal effort to become more inclusive and more collaborative.

I did #Handsoff and I'm glad I did. Practice corporeal politics. Act like the free person you still are. I'm super-pleased about the national breadth of of the protests, and that people found it heartening. Giving people courage.
And yet, I had mixed feelings, which I decided were best kept to myself. In the crowd I kept seeing signs I remembered from the first administration. There was that lovely "Resist" banner Greenpeace raised ... 1/?

"Hands Off!" in Seattle Center had massive turnout and was a bittersweet experience. I was struck by the diversity in motivations, stories, causes - so much anger, pain, and yet resilience in the community. So many different lives affected and coming together as one.
About 25,000 attendees in downtown Seattle all spoke out against the toxic, destructive Trump administration. If you are in the United States and are hurt, angry, or scared - consider donating to Indivisible (https://indivisible.org) or to the ACLU (https://action.aclu.org/give/pm-donate-to-aclu). Even signing up for their email lists will let you learn about upcoming events or volunteer opportunities.
