After 25 hours and 5 minutes speaking directly to the American people, Senator Booker broke the record for longest individual floor speech ever delivered, surpassing the previous record set by Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. </p>
<p>Yesterday, Senator Booker took to the Senate floor with the intention of speaking as long as he was physically able to uplift the stories of Americans who are being harmed by the Trump Administration’s reckless actions, attempts to undermine our institutions, and disregard for the rule of law.</p>

I’m seeing people calling what Cory Booker did a “long speech” rather than “a filibuster” even though all a filibuster is is a senator giving a long speech to hold the floor and delay the senate.
In his case, he held up a senate confirmation.
Why are we creating a “separate but equal” category of filibuster here?
So segregationist Strom Thurmond can keep the record?
