One of the best aspects of #photography is that you spend a lot of time noticing. Prior to photography, I never paid attention to overwintered plants like these seed pods (sweetgum?) from Friday. You miss a lot when you don't notice. Like the beauty of overwintered plants.

Elm bark landscape.

Black and white photo of elm tree bark. The photo has been flipped on its side so that the grain of the bark runs horizontally rather than the actual vertical. Elm bark is heavily textured with large, highlighted, angular protuberances and deep, shadowed crevasses that create a dense three dimensional structure. In the horizontal position it gives the impression of wind-driven waves or a landscape filled with either squat hills or exposed sedimentary rocks with sharp edges.

Chicago drawbridge.

This was taken on the Chicago Architecture Center's architectural boat tour of downtown Chicago. Well worth it if you visit Chicago and have the time.

Ornamental grass eye.

Black and white photograph of green and yellow crisscrossing ornamental grass blades. The crossing blades create triangular and diamond shapes within the various layers of grasses. Each blade is striped in dark approaching black and light approaching white. The dark and light striping is further enhanced by the light that penetrates through the grasses leaving areas of highlight and shadow. The vertical photograph has been flipped sideways to emphasize the geometry of the overlapping blades and the abstract nature of the photograph.

Turnouts take flight.

Black and white photograph of a couple of dark cylindrical railroad cars on a railroad track next to three additional tracks all of which are connected via sequential railroad turnouts or switches marked by switch stands. The bottom portion of dark hill is visible in the far-right frame and two railroad tracks, and a tree-lined hill are visible in the background of the upper frame. The tracks angle from the lower left corner to the upper right where the disappear around a corner. The tracks begin parallel and converge at each sequential turnout into a single track in the upper right frame where they run next to the other track in the far background. The scene is starkly lit with heavy shadows and glaring highlights creating heavy contrasts. A twisting path of frozen water at the base of the hill in the far right indicates that that the photo was taken in wintertime. The rails and ties are dark and are surrounded by much lighter and heavily textured that reflects most of the light on the shadow dappled tracks.

Graduation adjacent at the University of Iowa.

Black and white photograph of a couple sitting next to each other on a short grass lawn with out of focus trees, bushes, and people in the background. The couple are sitting close to one another with a young man in a dark shirt, dark shorts with a white stripe, tube socks, and Converse high-tops sitting in front of and mostly obscuring a young woman leaving only her face visible. The young woman is looking down at a laptop screen on the ground directly in font of her and the young man is looking over her shoulder and down at the laptop. In the background there are a mix of old and young people gathered on a sidewalk and lawn behind the young couple. One of the persons in the background, mostly obscured by people in the foreground, has a black mortarboard and tassel typical of a student graduating from university. The youth and casual dress of the young couple in the foreground along with a black backpack tossed on the ground next to them suggests that the couple may be a year or two away from graduating themselves.

Headed west.

Black and white photograph of a set of railroad tracks that stretch from the bottom frame to nearly the top of the frame. There are seven separate, parallel tracks with one set in the center frame and three sets of tracks on either side. The view is from above and due to the perspective the tracks don't appear parallel but angle and converge toward the top center frame where they turn to the right. There is a large rail shed in the upper left frame, commercial and residential buildings visible in the top center frame, a fence with cars parked on the far side in the upper right frame, as well as trees and clear sky near the horizon in the upper frame. The tracks are mostly in shadows with patches of light near the upper frame. The tops of the metal rails are shiny, the wooden tracks are dark, and the gravel under and surrounding the tracks is heavily textured.
