This is a ‘selfie’ during a ‘TransLancs’ ride—the length of Lancashire (actually Rochdale to Arnside, because of railway stations), taking in two major off-road sections: the Salter Fell track across the Forest of Bowland, but first, seen here, the amazing Cotton Famine Road over Rooley Moor.

This is from my first trip, in Jyväskylä, and I think it tells you a lot about the country. There were more people cycling, in temperatures of —12C and below, than you’d see on a balmy summer day in most UK cities. I think right here is where I began to fall in love with Finland.

A visitor from abroad was surprised to discover that you can borrow an electric cargo bike at the hardware store if you need to carry bulky stuff home.
The first two hours are free. After that, you pay 99 kr. (about €13) per hour. Another nice sign, I think, of the advantages of walkable, bikable cities.
Also, we really need to get Mr. Blue a new #bike helmet soon. His is circa 2006.
