I've never built an instrument but my dream as a middle school kid was to go to William and Mary and study violin making. Then I missed out on the same damn dream a decade later when I lived in Boston when I could have spent time at North Bennet Street School doing the same thing! I've bought and rebuilt four or five banjos though, replaced skin heads and all that, I really need to learn how to take the bow out of a neck though. I can't get to the 14th fret of my favorite banjo without bleeding.
If I could fix necks maybe I could do that as a part time job if I ever retire! What a great idea!

Have you ever noticed that there’s often a very recognizable quality in recordings from musicians and bands who started their career as street performers/buskers? Maybe it’s just me, and I’m not even sure I can adequately describe it, but there’s this extra bit of oomph, spark, je ne sais quoi, that grabs and holds your attention. Whatever it is, I feel that with artists like Glen Hansard, Moon Hooch [moonhooch.bandcamp.com], and this ensemble, Tuba Skinny, who is sure to bring a get your toes a-tappin’ with their traditional New Orleans sound.
This album made me immediately imagine walking through a park or outdoor festival or NYC subway station and stumbling upon them performing live. I can only assume they are best experienced live, so I was happy to see while writing this that they just put out a live album a couple of weeks ago (Live @ D.B.A. [tubaskinny.bandcamp.com])! So, if you enjoy Some Kind-a-Shake, perhaps next check that one out.
