Another aspect of the housing crisis:
For newly qualified teachers & nurses living in a flat share is often the only viable option; across England in around half of Council areas, a one-bedroom flat is unaffordable on their pay.
If you want to retain newly qualified staff, they need to be able to move from a model of student accommodation (a shared house) to something reflecting their privacy & welfare needs... we need better (affordable) housing for key workers.
A new report suggests that for UK employers (due to a low level of mandatory sick pay) its often cheaper to pay the sick pay, replace the worker(s) & not bother with occupational health support intended to retain staff.
The report suggests employers want to retain staff who are sick, but what reality tells us is that they treat workers as a cost, especially when they're ill & mostly fail to invest in their health & wellbeing to get them back to work.
