"Wicked" costume designer Paul Tazewell is the first Black man to win an Oscar in this category. He told the press:
“This is the pinnacle of my career. I've been doing costumes for over 35 years. The whole way through there was never a Black male designer that I saw that I could follow, that I could see as inspiration. To realize that that's actually me, it became a 'Wizard of Oz' moment, there's no place like home. To come back to the inspiration being inside of me is really remarkable.”

I don’t think enough people understand the implication of the Wizard of Oz being a charlatan from Kansas who gained unquestioned political power by pretending to be some exceptional man and miracle worker that he is not.

Every time the comic says "Good News" I'm reading it to the tune of the opening song from Wicked.

Woke up mentally singing Defying Gravity from Wicked.
Here is the original stage version. https://song.link/us/i/1440802840
Once again I'm late to the party, but we've just come back from watching Wicked at the cinema and it's a very big thumbs up from me. And more importantly, a big positive vote from Mrs LT who is a huge fan of the Wicked stage musical.

Just watched #Wicked again with my daughter. Five people in the cinema, including us, so the Popcorn factor was beautifully low.
I can't quite get past just how beautiful and talented Cynthia Erivo is and how, for extremely obvious reasons, both the boys and girls at Shiz are attracted to Jonathan Bailey.
Such a great film. I love musicals.
So I watched Wicked and I was… underwhelmed. Cynthia Erivo was fantastic, as was Ariana Grande despite being made up to look like an albino chihuahua. The production design was also wonderful, I would kill for a ride on the beautiful green train that takes them to Oz. The problem was the songs, they were just … meh. At the end of the film the only song I could remember was Defying Gravity and that’s because I’ve heard it so many times elsewhere. #Wicked #Musical
'The Substance' was outstanding, and Demi Moore's performance as Elisabeth was heartbreaking and chilling. From her speech alone it's clear that the film and its core themes meant a lot to her on a personal level, as a woman and as an actor. It's good to see her break out of the boxes that the industry tried to put her in, though she has certainly shown her range in the past, the recognition she gets is much deserved.
That said, it's always a bit weird seeing horror films being classified as musicals or comedies in order to be eligible for awards. Jordan Peele's 'Get Out' had multiple nominations as a comedy a few years ago as well. It's an odd practice that highlights Hollywood's refusal to treat horror as a legitimate genre, while simultaneously leading to actual comedies or musicals being sidelined too.
Cynthia Erivo was brilliant in 'Wicked', her performance was full of heart, not to mention how she mastered belting those notes while flying and flipping upside down. She deserved that recognition on her own merit. Not saying that everyone should somehow win, but these two films, and these two women, shouldn't really have to compete against each other.

Well, Wicked most definitely deserved the hype! One of the best musical to film adaptations I've seen. The Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth cameo scene was a really nice addition, very sweet and quite fitting. Ariana Grande was a revelation, both her singing and comedic timing were phenomenal, but it's really Cynthia Erivo who absolutely stole the show. Such a powerhouse performance, that final scene blew me away and gave me goosebumps. Cannot wait for part 2 to arrive later this year!
Some "Wicked" fans are up in arms about spoilers — in spite of the fact that the show was first performed 20 years ago and the book published in 1995. While the writers told @THR the story has been out there so long it can't be spoiled, the magazine's senior awards editor says the film is its own thing and so moviegoers should just . Read their competing points of view here. We want to know: What's your perspective on spoilers?

Wicked stage and film comparison...
It'll be interesting to see how they reframe Nessarose and Elphaba's reunion in Part Two given the difference in their relationship when they came to Shiz in Part One...
Wheeeee.... And we're through.
Now, I must have seen this show since Frozen came out, but the laughter at "they're just shoes. Let it go" line usually feels aimed at the disconnect between the Glinda saying it and Glinda the fashion obsessed... Tonight it felt more meta - that Idina Menzel went on to sing that in Frozen...
Theatrical meta can be fun... I remember Nathan Lane as Roy Cohn in Angels in America telling us La Cage was "best thing on Broadway"
'Tis an understudy Fiyero I think... Not as hot.
Also, I think there are costume changes from previous tours... But we still have boys in skirts 8-) I love these costumes
And Boq is missing George Ure's gorgeous Scottish accent...
But it is so good still...
And, with the exception of that *one* bit, the extra bits in the film are not necessary...
Also, if the pictures in the "brochure" are anything to go by, Fiyero is actually hot* (sorry Jonathan Bailey, you're alright, but...) and Boq** looks like I expect again (also cute)
* Carl Man... But will he beat out Liam Doyle for me??
** Jed Berry - but my go-to is probably always going to be George Ure
