A transgender college student declared “I am here to break the law” before entering a women’s restroom at the Florida State Capitol and being led out in handcuffs by police. Civil rights attorneys say the arrest of Marcy Rheintgen last month is the first they know of for violating transgender bathroom restrictions passed by numerous state legislatures across the country.

Discrimination against trans Olympians has roots in #NaziGermany
The forgotten Olympic history of #TransAthletes.
by Alex Abad-Santos
Updated Aug 1, 2024
Excerpt: "Outside of the [Olympic] Games, trans people face so much backlash, often for simply existing. The conversation around sports is particularly fraught, from children’s athletics right up through the pros. Despite the International Olympic Committee vowing to be more inclusive, the future for trans athletes is unclear.
"It all raises the question: How did we get to this point, and did it always have to be this way?
"The answers found in historian and journalist #MichaelWaters’s The Other Olympians: #Fascism, #Queerness, and the Making of Modern Sports might be surprising. Waters’s book traces the emergence of #ZdeněkKoubek, a track and field star representing the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia who, at 21, won two medals — a gold in the 800m and a bronze in the long jump — at the 1934 Women’s World Games. (The Women’s World Games was the precursor to women competing at the Olympics). In 1935, Koubek announced that he would be living life as a man and swiftly became an international celebrity.
"Perhaps the most intriguing facet to Koubek’s story was in the public response. Koubek was more welcomed and celebrated than we might imagine. There was an open-mindedness and empathy to the reception of Koubek and his gender identity and expression in the 1930s.
"Waters also pinpoints where and when that changed, specifically at the #1936Olympics in #Nazi Germany. Armed with a propensity for #eugenics, #GenderAnxiety, and a startling lack of scientific evidence, a small set of Nazi officials influenced the International Olympic Committee into #GenderSurveillance and #TransPanic — stuff that eerily mirrors the #transphobic attacks that athletes, cis and trans alike, face today."

So, I wanted to highlight this quote from #TransAthlete #ChrisMosier [which I totally identify with]:
"An increased scrutiny on athletes' bodies creates serious harm to all women and girls who are perceived as 'more masculine' due to being #queer, #intersex, or otherwise out of alignment with narrow, white-centric norms of femininity."
Or those of us with higher androgen levels naturally!

For #TransDayOfVisibility, I am reminding y'all of the ‘Protect Trans Kids’ poster above the door of Gwen's bedroom in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’
You are seen. You are worthy. And you are deserving, regardless of what trans visibility looks like for you
Happy #TransDayOfVisibility to all of amazing transgender peoples!
Every transgender person are so awesome for being theirselves it makes me happy to hear that!
And remember that #TransRightsAreHumanRights every transgender person deserves all human rights!
Today is Trans Day of Visibility. Here's a @Flipboard Storyboard celebrating the achievements of trans people and detailing how they are resisting attempts to erase them. "It's not a closet — it's a chrysalis," trans chaplain Rev. Caroline Morrison told The Advocate. "They try to make it a closet, but no. We grow, we change, we become new beings. And once we break free, there's no putting us back."

March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility. People who are trans, nonbinary, fluid, and all identities have always been part of theatre, culture, and our world and the performing arts is built on expressing yourself and being seen - even when (and sometimes especially so) when wearing costumes and masks).
Celebrate and ensure trans rights are human rights!
Our troupe is a patchwork of players from all walks of life. Together the myriad of patchwork pieces makes something amazing and brilliant. Every patch is valid and wanted.
For those curious, here’s my #TDOV speech:
I have a message for the trans youth who are here today: you have a future. You have a future where you will be able to live, to love, and to thrive. Each and every one of you have a future where you will get to be your whole, beautiful self, and shine so brightly no one will be able to deny you.
Right about now, you might be rolling your eyes. Not only is that sappy as heck, but Joscelyn, look around and read the room: they are trying to make it so we cannot even survive until tomorrow, much less the future! They are declaring that they don’t deserve equal rights in schools and public life, that it should be a crime to even tell people your name or pronouns, and doing everything they can to stop our trans kids from having equal access to life-saving medical care. So how can I say you have a future?
The reason I know you have a future is because I am standing here right now. As an out and proud trans woman, *I* am the future that seemed impossible to me when I was your age. I am the future of a trans kid who grew up when it was a crime to be gay and trans.
I grew up in the midwest in the 1990s in a state where it was still a crime to be gay. This is blunt, but the only trans people who were visible to me at that time were punchlines and corpses. Hit movies played up the sexual assault of trans women for laughs or used the “shock” and “disgust” at our bodies as a dramatic twist. The only visibility in the news, when there was any, were our siblings who were murdered, such as Brandon Teena and Rita Hester. To dream of being an adult trans woman with a family - it felt like I would need to find a genie in a bottle or a magical potion because it was impossible to me.
But I’m here to declare that we, as trans people, do the impossible every single dang day. When the days ahead get hard, remind yourself: we will make the impossible happen, and we will do it together!
