There’s a certain degree of predictability to #fascism, so this whole thing with the #gulfofmexico is likewise predictable and a part of the playbook you’d expect to see.
I came up with this acronym to remind myself what the typical parts of fascism happen to be. Maybe it was already a known mnemonic and I simply discovered something that was already used. Anyway, an easy way to remember the hallmarks of a fascist regime:
BAN THEM

Authoritarianism
Nationalism
Totalitarianism
Hierarchy
Elitism
Militarism
So seeing #trump renaming the Gulf, banning the AP from news conferences for refusing to bend the knee, it pretty much checks all those boxes.
It’s important to note what makes up the key parts of fascism as things unfold. You know how #ElonMusk labels anything and everything he doesn’t like as #woke? Well the claim is already getting tossed around from his camp that we’re doing the same thing with the word “fascism” (e.g. Because I don’t like X policy it is therefore fascism). It’s important to have that metric in mind so if you do decide to engage with them, you have facts you can point to.
Those facts only matter to us obviously as you can’t bring up facts to someone who is approaching you in bad faith. But still I think it will be helpful as many will likely be inclined to say “Oh well that’s certainly not fascism” because admitting that is quite an uncomfortable truth that many will turn away from until it’s impossible for them to ignore it any longer.
Anyway, stay strong and don’t make safe spaces for fascists. Ban Them from your spaces.
