A new French film, “L’Histoire de Souleymane” (Souleymane’s Story) is reviewed in the latest edition of @thecontinent. Here’s what they thought of this story of a young Guinean man’s undocumented life in Paris.
“[Abou] Sangare’s emotional performance explores Souleymane’s vulnerabilities and anxieties as if they were his own. Perhaps it helped that the actor himself had only recently been granted a six-month temporary visa in France after living undocumented since 2017. He knew those anxieties intimately,” write Line Sidonie and Talla Mafotsing.

Update: Metrics show that access to social media has been restored in #Guinea after a 90-day long restriction; the restoration comes as the Guinean Trade Union Movement, which unites the nation's main unions, calls on authorities to lift internet restrictions immediately

b) If the votes cannot be reliably counted, then the establishment of some fashion of civilian power sharing authority that could facilitate the transition would be a positive step.
c) If the #Gabon military does neither of these, it would be a sign that, like so many other coups, the legitimate frustrations of the people were merely a pretext for seizing power—as is clearly the case in #Guinea, #BurkinaFaso, #Niger, and especially #Mali, which is entering Year Four of military rule.
As the case of #Guinea shows, the problem with coups continues to be that the resulting juntas never want to leave.
After 56 years of Bongo family rule, how the military wields its seizure of power will be critical:
a) If Gabon's military is genuinely interested in restoring democratic institutions, it could facilitate a recount of the recent election. If the opposition has indeed won, the military could facilitate a transition to a democratically elected leader.

Some initial observations on Africa's latest coup, in #Gabon:
Gabon is more like Guinea than Niger, in that the coup is an undemocratic response to an already undemocratic rule: Neither #Guinea's nor Gabon's elections were remotely credible. As a result, while the coup remains illegitimate, it is unlikely that long-time ruler Ali Bongo will find the level of international and domestic support that #Niger's Bazoum still enjoys.

In the past few years, #Guinea , #Mali

have seen coups, in which the new military governments embrace authoritarianism & (usually) #Russia

#France is also partially to blame for this, but that is another topic for another day.

Niger has fallen: Military coup plotters end democracy in the country
I was hoping #Niger would thwart this latest coup attempt, but the nation has fallen.
There has been a collapse of democratic governments amongst #Francophone African nations (or African nations that were colonized by #France ).
#Guinea , #Mali
& #BurkinaFaso
have also fallen (the latter two had double coups).
