This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Homo #neanderthalensis aka #Neanderthal
In 1829, Philippe-Charles Schmerling, found a partial skull in the Grottes d'Engis, Belgium. He thought it was a "poorly developed" human
In 1856, schoolteacher Johann Carl Fuhlrott recognised bones from Kleine Feldhofer Grotte in Neander Valley as distinct from humans. They were given to anthropologist Hermann Schaaffhausen to study
In 1863, "Neanderthal Man" was proposed as a new species. This was formalised in 1864

For #FossilFriday, we have dinosaur footprints from the Jurassic of Queensland.
Detailed in a recent Historical Biology paper that has received enormous press coverage. Congrats to Anthony Romilio et al. on your work & press campaign!

This week for #Fossilfriday we have another #Guess that #Lego #Fossil.
This one I would rate as easy. This is one of our closest relatives.
Reminder: hide your answer behind a content warning. This will allow others to guess without a hint. I will post the answer tomorrow (and to anyone who guesses correctly).

Close up views of the heat-treated fossiliferous chalcedony core debitages. A lot of small fossils & fragments, with some small crinoid sections.
The Wetherington Island site was primarily an Archaic period lithic quarry where natives mined & partially reduced chert, chalcedony & agatized coral so they could transport the blanks elsewhere. Thermally altered lithic material probably represented <2% of the recovered artifacts. 2/ #Archaeology #fossils #FossilFriday #lithics
Blocky debitage from a thermally altered fossiliferous chalcedony core, 8HI473, the Wetherington Island site, Hillsborough Co., FL. The heat treating turned the chalcedony shades of pink & red.
We recovered approximately 6.35 metric tons of lithic artifacts from the site (Probably 4 tons in my feature alone), so we did have an adequate sample to say heat treating was not part of the normal quarry process at the site. 1/ #Archaeology #FossilFriday #lithics
#FossilFriday Molluscs 3 consecutive weeks! Ammonite Parahoplites stantoni, Cretaceous, Shasta Co., California. Many ammonites were geographically widespread, without tariffs. #paleontology @calacademy.bsky.social @calacademy https://flic.kr/p/Yx4f34
This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Protemnodon
In the early-mid 1800s, fossil remains of several different species were found in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. They were sent to English biologist Richard Owen.
In 1874, he would name a newly found kangaroo relative Protemnodon anak.
Protemnodon is thought to be physically similar to the far smaller Wallaby. But the largest ones grew almost to the size of Procoptodon, the giant short fact kangaroo.
Happy #FossilFriday, check out some tiny tracks from the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site! These darling little traces were likely made by very young coelophysid theropods, perhaps making their first romp around the ancient lake they called home. (1/2)

#LostBones #FossilFriday! In June 1921 at Sagamore Iron Mine near Riverton, MN, workers uncovered a bed of bison bones in a peat deposit. Skulls, vertebrae, ribs, and limb bones were collected and sent to the Smithsonian Institution for study.
Today, the skull shown here remains in Minnesota, displayed at the Crow Wing County Historical Society in Brainerd.
