In short: US companies can apply for #mining rights in international waters, essentially bypassing international environmental regulations and protections meant to safeguard the ocean. This is a huge step towards the industrial #exploitation of the #DeepSea, which remains one of the last pristine frontiers on Earth.
And it’s not just a legal technicality, this is an environmental disaster in the making!

"Oplophoroidea migrate vast distances, up and down in the water column. Some of them have special glowing organs that they use to camouflage, defend themselves and maybe even communicate. They have evolved a diversity of light-detecting proteins that can help them navigate"

A faunal inventory of #MethaneSeeps on the Pacific margin of #CostaRica: Charlotte Seid et al. https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/134385/
"marine biologists have documented the highest known count of deep-sea species living in methane seeps off Costa Rica's Pacific coast... Of the documented species, at least 58 are entirely new to science"

although I love it, I often forget to post about episodes of the Common Descent podcast. Here's the newest episode on Chimaeras, those strange, strange cartilaginous fish, related to sharks and rays, but outside of Elasmobranchii .

#Scientists just filmed a rare video of a giant #DeepSea #squid carrying eggs https://oceanographicmagazine.com/news/scientists-just-filmed-a-rare-video-of-a-giant-squid-carrying-its-eggs/
"Usually, squid species lay their eggs on the seafloor and leave them alone after they despatched them, but this species of squid – the black-eyed squid (Gonatus onyx) – carries and broods its eggs for several months and therefore is one of only two so far confirmed species that are known to take care off their offspring after spawning."
Introduction:
Hi, I'm an artist who loves #videogames #books #paranormal #horror #invertebrates #space #deepsea and of course my OCs, to name a few things.
Those are most often the subjects of my works. I also draw #comic strips about our shenanigans in different co-op games.
Comic style combined with broken colors is my go-to style. Digital painting is my 2nd favorite.
Nice to meet you all! If you have any follow recommendations based on my interests, feel free to poke me!

"Characterized by darkness and intense pressure, the ocean's #HadalZone seems uninhabitable, yet dozens of unique organisms call it home... A new study highlights one of those species... This #crustacean is the first large, active predatory #amphipod from these extreme depths"

Suppose this is an announcement for a new horror project called "Deep Sea Claustrophobia".
Jokes aside, turned the submarine from last time into something more. Not there yet, but was good enough for a short introductory cutscene. Right?
Makes me wonder how much animated story/narration should be added.
Creating and writing monsters can seem daunting. In my Halloween blog, I suggest you look to the depths of the ocean for influence. The horrifying monsters are already there under the cold, dark and crushing weight of the depths.

Why yes I did just spend the day researching creatures of the deep sea for my Halloween writing blog - Monsters of the Deep.
Such fun!
