I finally tested it successfully:

"Substital" is an add-on for Firefox and Chrome that allows you to display captions / subtitles in nearly any video that you can see on a website, either by searching for it on OpenSubtitles or by loading a caption file from your device locally.

This way you can, for example, watch an old show's episode on archive.org and add a local SRT file so the video gets captions.

God, stop captioning foreign languages with "(foreign language)" and such shit!
If people speaking the language could HEAR the information, they should also be able to READ it!

I'm not interested in self-hosting, and I'm open to paid solutions. I know that there are some services that offer a bot that you can invite into your meeting to transcribe, but the ones I've tried don't work with Jitsi (Iist in )

Damn, this episode had basically a full introduction between three characters fully captioned as "[speaking Spanish]" only.

How cheap is that?!
Even without knowing actual Spanish I might've understood a bit of it if they cared about writing it out! *mumbles angrily*

It should have been obvious, but when I finally was made to think about the fact that there are people who rely on photo captions to see images, I felt a great responsibility to describe them as faithfully as possible. I take more care with captions than I do toots.

My thoughts aren't really very important, but being able to perceive an image, that deserves some accuracy.
