That experiment has mostly been a success and I've now migrated away from my once-main instance.</p><p>I'm a former software developer of over 20 years, working primarily in <a href="https://xn--8r9a.com/tags/opensource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>opensource</span></a> and <a href="https://xn--8r9a.com/tags/telephony" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>telephony</span></a>. I now do <a href="https://xn--8r9a.com/tags/cybersecurity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cybersecurity</span></a> as a profession, after starting to do cybersecurity research as a hobby about a year ago.</p><p>In the last year, I've found and disclosed several dozen <a href="https://xn--8r9a.com/tags/vulnerabilities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vulnerabilities</span></a> in <a href="https://xn--8r9a.com/tags/govtech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>govtech</span></a> platforms like <a href="https://xn--8r9a.com/tags/court" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>court</span></a> and <a href="https://xn--8r9a.com/tags/voter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>voter</span></a> registration systems, which have gotten a not insignificant amount of press coverage. Gary Parker<p>Isn't it crazy to think how, in this age of security and privacy, we used to get a huge paper printed book delivered to our door every year with everyone and every company in the town/local area’s name and phone number in it?</p><p>And it was considered a little odd, or even ostentatious, to “go ex-directory” and not be in the book 🤔</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/telephony" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>telephony</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/security" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>security</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/opSec" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>opSec</span></a></p>

vga256<p>from a childhood friend's acreage. 30 years ago as kids we were always fascinated by this yellow buried cable warning in his yard, especially the word "zenith" which we associated only with televisions.</p><p>TIL 'zenith' was a codeword for a toll-free number!</p><p>"Before the toll-free number as we know it, things were a little more complicated. Callers’ only other option was essentially pre-approved collect calls. In order to make a free phone call—one that the receiving party had to pay for—you still had to dial the operator first.</p><p>In the 1950s, this type of free calling was introduced as a Zenith number. (Some parts of the U.S. called it the Enterprise or WX number.) Any business that wanted the ability to accept these toll-free calls had to register for a Zenith number, which was usually in the format of N-NNNN preceded by a one or two letter code for the corresponding city.</p><p>Soon Zenith numbers were listed in place of long distance numbers. Phone books and advertisements would be posted in communities in which the company wanted to do business. Consumers would call the operator and ask to be connected to the Zenith number. The Zenith numbers were listed in a paperback book available only to the switchboard operators. The operator would then look up the Zenith number and find the corresponding “regular” 10-digit number to complete the connection as a collect call without first having to reach the receiving party for permission."</p><p>source: <a href="https://bebusinessed.com/history/history-of-toll-free-numbers/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bebusinessed.com/history/histo</span><span class="invisible">ry-of-toll-free-numbers/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://dialup.cafe/tags/telephony" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>telephony</span></a> <a href="https://dialup.cafe/tags/alberta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alberta</span></a></p>
