One year ago, September 23, 2023, I got on a Discord Call with @nicdex to work out me coming on TechHub #staff as a #Moderator. There was another influx incoming, and I wanted to help Fedi in any way I could, so I #volunteered, and TechHub needed another experienced moderator.

Of the tens of thousands of servers on the fediverse, there are about 200 or so which have administrations which actively support Naziism, Pedophilia, Terrorism, and other serious issues which #Moderation on mainstream Fedi blocks on sight.
TechHub only blocks instances we see as a serious threat to our timeline / users, but we are old and I am thorough, and thus, we've accumulated a considerably large (200+) list of the WORST instances. I publish a curated and annotated version of this list so that #Staff / #FediAdmin s can see it, and potentially import all or part of our blocks.

In light that moderation issues will increase as we near the US Election, I have just pushed another update. I HIGHLY recommend every admin look at this, and consider importing all or part of it.

@Raccoon@techhub.socialFinally, someone pointed out to me another snag in encryption recently. Encryption doesn't just hide the post from malicious actors, it can also hide it from the server itself: #staff already has difficulty #moderating direct messages, as they require reporting to work, and this adds another layer. Anything that can't be decrypted by the server software would even bypass locally based automation: we couldn't even set up a bot to watch for people saying the N word in the DM system, which is the number one way it's abused.
I don't necessarily think staff should be reading people's private messages without permission, it's definitely not an ability I would want to see implemented, but I worry that encryption could preclude us from implementing more sophisticated #moderation tools. Without it, the best we could do is have some sort of javascript-based system in the viewer itself recommending the user report a post when it detects things.
Maybe we should, but it needs to be considered.
