Does it factor into your WIP in any way?</p><p>It doesn't factor into the story, but here we go. Here's just a handful of the characters in the series.</p><p>FYI: Gang members and those in the criminal world tend to be on the thinner side, only because food with nutrition is more expensive and therefore harder to find (or afford). Cyberpunk works don't feature happy and peaceful worlds, after all.</p><p>• Dr. Death (Antagonist / Villain): He's well-toned, nice body. Everyone falls for him. (Yuck.) <br>• Alexios (MC): He's muscular but also on the taller side (and covered in scars and cybernetic parts). <br>• Noona (SC): She's scary and intimidating despite being thinner. No one f*cks with her.<br>• Junk (SC): He's a bit fluffy, on the chunky side, and he's adorable for it. <br>• Trick (SC later turned MC): He's thin and graceful. <br>• Dante (SC): He's tall (even taller than Alexios) and slim. Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome in every way. He's in shape. <br>• Cosmia (SC): Short and well-toned (especially her arms). She works out. Often. Being a bar owner isn't the only thing she does at work. She's also a bouncer of sorts. </p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/WritingCommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WritingCommunity</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/TheCityOfOpulence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheCityOfOpulence</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/DigitalDystopiaSeries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalDystopiaSeries</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/SFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SFF</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/ScienceFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceFiction</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Worldbuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Worldbuilding</span></a></p>

It can affect the brain in the myriad of ways. Dante's family have suffered a lot in the past, and his father was one such case. The man went insane from a virus on his chip. Today, prior to writing chapter 23 in <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSMarsNeededWomen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSMarsNeededWomen</span></a>, I thought out an important message in my story that made it real and strongly relevant today:</p><blockquote><p>From her first lover, May Ri scores for Mars a full scan of a 1890s to 2032 UNCENSORED paper book library. (In 2025, we're experiencing the progressive singularity hinted at in the novel.) …</p></blockquote><p>That became the following in what I just published in the web-novel:</p><blockquote><p>She read the summary. "'Re-education?' Wow, what a loaded word. Some fascist Decath patriarch was reading his copy of Raymond's uncensored library—and got the idea why the 2025-oligarchs banned them, huh?"</p></blockquote><p>Burn. Apropos, since I wrote about this same villain a few days ago in another in PennedPossibilities 620, saying:</p><blockquote><p>I hate this motherf'er, and so far I've only enjoyed hurting him. He consistently underestimates women. In a few days, I'll write and post the chapter where May Ri sees him die about as spectacularly as possible, with maximum fireworks.</p></blockquote><p>Which resulted in this today:</p><blockquote><p>May Ri realized the magnitude of the flare. Not sep. No benign peeling off of three boosters. It brightened, quickly blinding. One flare, five, then twenty. A string of pearls in the heavens, snapped off a mythical deity's neck, strewn angrily across the sky. A swarm of fireballs, another flare, two, then red comets that looked that way due to the increasing friction of re-entry.</p><p>"Oops," said Reina. "Should've run more sims."</p></blockquote><p>See video. Same. (Romance novels too, but that's something he'll NEVER tell another living soul, not even Junk.) During workdays, he spends time searching (and reading) the system database and combing through the warehouse archives for acquired books and other trinkets. It's all for black market clients, and it depends on whatever they want. Alexios' gang sell antiques and oddities to customers willing to pay for their desired items. If there's something they don't actually have, Alexios and his gang will do everything they can to find it for them. But yes, Alexios enjoys reading in his downtime. When he is dragged to meet a bellicose ambassador in a very disruptive meeting, he can't help but recognize Thorn Rose's mother's accent. </p><p>It's <em>draconic.</em></p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a></p>

But she's been schooled "here" her whole life, so it would be faint. In our terms, it would be equivalent to meeting a white girl but she has a faintly Cuban accent. There is no cognate to Earthly accents to play off of, and if I mention it, it will be that her mother has the accent or someone will startle, or will suddenly be prejudiced against her when they weren't before she opened her mouth.</p><p>As per his backstory, he might have an accent but it would evidence itself as less precise English: lots of contractions, mild burrs, bad (simplified) grammar, that type of thing. A flavor of Street Talk. I think I'll skip describing it in the story because most of the story takes place at least seven years after he meets her. She's so precise about things she's almost obsessive, and she'd correct any and all lazy speech. Indeed, he's what he is, going to university instead of accepting a blue collar job, and eventually becoming an astronaut because of her attention to detail in his life. He loves pleasing her, however (and in our terms loves her), so it's his choice to change, always. Booyaka, booyaka, that's my pueblo!" God, I love Rey Mysterio so much. </p><p>Alexios Jace comes from a planet that I've mentioned many times before called New Glasgow, where a group of people (Scottish families, obviously) left Earth as it was dying and claimed a habitable world for their own. That particular planet was destroyed by the Syndicate, and Alexios was the sole survivor. Now living on Citune, he's the only one with a voice quite like his. He has a distinctly Scottish accent, setting him apart from everyone else around. His slang is a mix of cyperpunk and Glaswegian. While he says "choom" like everyone else, he always throws around "mate" rather easily as well. That's just a quick example. I will say, on top of things, he's always a mardy, grumpy man, and he tends to grumble a lot. His voice is deeper, thick with an accent, and everyone automatically assumes he's pissed off. Go figure.</p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/WritingCommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WritingCommunity</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/TheCityOfOpulence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheCityOfOpulence</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/DigitalDystopiaSeries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalDystopiaSeries</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/SFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SFF</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/ScienceFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceFiction</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Worldbuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Worldbuilding</span></a></p>
Zivan - Childless Cat Guy<p>I've reread: In the Company of Ogres by A. Lee Martinez</p><p>In the Company of Ogres takes some strange twists and turns. Every time I thought I knew which kind of story this is it took a twist and turned into something else.</p><p>We start with Demonic Accountants running the place, continue with a black sheep last chance Cinderella story move to a bit too much teenage love triangle and end up with cosmic forces at work.</p><p>But the best thing about Martinez is that he is funny, and Ogres is first and foremost a satire of fantasy tropes. My favorite moment was a game of Real D&amp;D played by Ogres, goblins, orcs, and so on... playing as other D&amp;D character types. </p><p>And how can you not love a story about a character called: Never Dead Ned. </p><p>Sadly fore some reason this is the only A. Lee Martinez novel not available as an audobook. </p><p><a href="https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/9e9c0f3b-97ea-474b-8837-e9683110471f" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">app.thestorygraph.com/books/9e</span><span class="invisible">9c0f3b-97ea-474b-8837-e9683110471f</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/SFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SFF</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/satire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>satire</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a></p>

Design is a squishy word. Do they show up on stage for a purpose? Yes. Randy showed up for May Ri when she was required to marry someone. We soon learn he was supposed to marry May Ri's friend, but he agrees. Streak Carryingaton and Thorn Rose appeared together, from a reference in another novel to a pair of astronauts. I immediately decided they were a couple, because their very existence needed to disrupt an entire lost civilization. I guess that's "designing them to interact," huh? Not like I'm taking out a piece of paper and writing a character sketch or list...</p><blockquote><p>Do you flesh out their backstory before you start writing?</p></blockquote><p>Pretty much never. Backstory generates itself. As people interact, I end up asking myself why certain details matter. Why did Randy mean to marry Reina not May Ri. Why was he on Mars? Why was this guy especially nice? Turns out he was a woman's rights activist at a period in time, like now, when reactionary forces put the hammer down. Lots more came from that. That sorta thing. I've been caught showing such rich generated backstory that I've been called out to write that story. My first published novel was the backstory in another novel I never finished as a result.</p><blockquote><p>Do you discover them as you go? </p></blockquote><p>Yep. As above, I find characters when I need them to fill rolls that pop up.</p><blockquote><p>Do you decide on race, gender, religion, sexuality, and all that ahead of time?</p></blockquote><p>With Streak and Thorn, I knew I was writing a feminist parable of the 1960s moonshot years, detailing the prejudice and the sexism, but also poking religious fanaticism in the eye. Streak and Rose need to be different, so I made him a day angel and her a daemon. (Mind you, they're both entirely human and their "types" are inherited from other stories, so the angel x daemon thing is a serendipitous matchup.) Their people distrust each other in this time period; essentially (NOT physically,) he's black, she's white, and they're a couple. Defines their sexuality. The concept of religion doesn't apply. And that's the thought process I started with. The rest flowed from action in the story. </p><p>Sometimes sexuality is important. Cloud Dancer is gay because I wanted to have him talk with the main character about what that felt like, and to help flesh out the society they live in. Other characters made my gay-dar antennae twitch, which eventually led to me writing a gay romance side story for them. All discovery while writing. </p><blockquote><p>Do you divide them between heroes and villains?</p></blockquote><p>People show their true colors, but when certain people show up on stage, I know their purpose immediately. When one of the board of directors for EM Mars Corp shows up in May Ri's habitat, ordering the women congregate in one dome, stating they're redistributing women's labor to put them to better use, and names "being married" one criteria, it becomes obvious something's wrong. He becomes a recurring villainous antagonist and he's helping me now advance the plot. He's May Ri's nemesis. She regrets not letting him die the time she could have done that. </p><blockquote><p>Do you "see" and "hear" them in your head? </p></blockquote><p>I can't visualize people in my head as some people can. My type of shy often makes me not look at people, to avert my gaze, especially when I was kid and I suppose one learns this type of visualization. I can take a thing, like a plush toy and rotate it in my head to see all sides, so I think it is learn it or lose it. In any case, I can only tag peoples attributes in my head. </p><p>I try not to describe people except vaguely, like eye color and height, so readers can relate to them better. Half way through <em>Mars Needed Women,</em> all we know about May Ri is her daughter has dark hair <em>like she does,</em> and that she's physically fit, and better than average height. That's it. </p><p>On the other hand, I assign characteristics when I think it will enhance other characters. The first person born on Mars has red hair and freckles, but asian eyes. Since she's treated as something of a big sister and a princess by all those born after her, I wanted pretty. The asian eyes got her the title Onēsanue (O - honorific, Nēsan - Big sister, ue - higher, special) and Japanese ancestry, which got her the surname Īto, which in turn helped describe her mother, one of the Directors, etc. </p><p>In another story, when it became important that a woman could sing, she got a soprano voice. The voice of the main character, who is the daughter of a famous opera singer who died, is only described as singing her mother's songs in the shower, and crying at the same time.</p><p>Lots of process here. Hope it helps!</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a></p>
