I roughly understand how do they work, but I would prefer to see some basic code because some parts are like magic for me. Charlotte Aten<p>I was curious about ZeroNet again today. ZeroNet was a <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/P2P" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>P2P</span></a> web project from the 2010s along similar lines to I2P (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I2P" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I2P</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>) and <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Tor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tor</span></a> hidden services. The idea of hosting dynamic webpages in a completely P2P fashion, like torrents, remains super cool and appealing to me. In fact, at one point the <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/BitTorrent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BitTorrent</span></a> company had a similar proposal (<a href="https://www.bittorrent.com/blog/2014/12/10/project-maelstrom-the-internet-we-build-next/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bittorrent.com/blog/2014/12/10</span><span class="invisible">/project-maelstrom-the-internet-we-build-next/</span></a>).</p><p>The ZeroNet website (<a href="https://zeronet.io/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">zeronet.io/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>) is still up, but the project hasn't been updated in five years as per the GitHub repo (<a href="https://github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNet" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNe</span><span class="invisible">t</span></a>). Someone was maintaining a fork at some point, and at other times I heard that ZeroNet was (now?) insecure, although I know no details. Certainly anything P2P isn't anonymous by default.</p><p>I found this question (<a href="https://github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNet/issues/2749" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNe</span><span class="invisible">t/issues/2749</span></a>) about the creator of ZeroNet. Disturbingly, this article (<a href="https://www.newsbtc.com/news/sam-maloney-creator-of-morphis-and-dpush-shot-dead-by-london-police/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">newsbtc.com/news/sam-maloney-c</span><span class="invisible">reator-of-morphis-and-dpush-shot-dead-by-london-police/</span></a>) about a different developer killed by the police under unusual circumstances was shared.</p><p>My impression was that ZeroNet actually worked (works?) to some extent. Why aren't projects like this being funded? We need censorship-resistant ways of communicating online, after all.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/ZeroNet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ZeroNet</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/I2P" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>I2P</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/censorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>censorship</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/DistributedWeb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DistributedWeb</span></a></p>

One of them, <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/EUR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EUR</span></a> rate with respect to <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/USD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USD</span></a>.</p><p>I agree these <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/decentralized" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>decentralized</span></a> <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/money" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>money</span></a> are not as much decentralized as they should be. But as a matter of comparing, the USD is under control of just one entity. But as for <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/Bitcoin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bitcoin</span></a>, several parties share authority.</p><p>Not to mention that <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cryptocurrencies</span></a> are not all the same. And there is <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/Monero" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Monero</span></a> which is much more decentralized thanks to their <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/P2P" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>P2P</span></a> mining pool.</p><p>We are not in a perfect world. Sometimes you haven't got a good choice. Only "bad" and "very bad" ones. In which case it's logical to choose "bad" because it's the "best" choice.</p><p>Last but not the least, cryptocurrencies are developed in the open in the general case. Where in the case of something like USD, it's up to the <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/US" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>US</span></a> government and central bank. If you don't like a crypto and you think your idea is better, it is possible to fork it and form your own community and network. For instance <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/BCH" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BCH</span></a> is a fork of <a href="https://cr8r.gg/tags/BTC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BTC</span></a>. Because some community members had the opinion BTC is going the wrong way.</p>

Otis Scops aka Crash Course<p>VPN Providers Consider Exiting France Over ‘Dangerous’ Blocking Demands</p><p>February 24, 2025</p><p>In France, rightsholders have taken legal action to compel large VPN providers to support their pirate site blocking program. The aim is to reinforce existing blocking measures, but VPN providers see this as a dangerous move, leading to potential security issues and overblocking. As a result, some are considering leaving France altogether if push comes to shove.</p><p>exit<br>Copyright holders see pirate site blocking as an effective and proportional tool to combat widespread online piracy.</p><p>Over the years, courts and lawmakers in dozens of countries have agreed, resulting in a patchwork of blocking regimes around the globe.</p><p>Initially, these efforts focused on residential ISPs as the key intermediaries. While these companies were not blamed directly, they were the go-to parties to implement blocking. That proved insufficient, however.</p><p>More recently, DNS resolvers have been targeted with blocking orders. Since services such as Cloudflare, Google and OpenDNS, can be used to bypass ISP blocking efforts, courts in Germany and France have determined that DNS resolvers should take responsibility too. </p><p>Read all:</p><p><a href="https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-providers-consider-exiting-france-over-dangerous-blocking-demands-240224/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">torrentfreak.com/vpn-providers</span><span class="invisible">-consider-exiting-france-over-dangerous-blocking-demands-240224/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/internet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>internet</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/surveillance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>surveillance</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pirate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pirate</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/p2p" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>p2p</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/download" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>download</span></a></p>
