People are being grabbed off the streets and illegally detained, deported and disappeared. </p><p>Marginalized groups are watching their civil rights vanish. </p><p>Disabled people are fighting funding cuts, threats to healthcare and mask bans. </p><p>Tourists from Canada, the UK and Germany been detained for weeks without any form of due process. </p><p>It is no longer a safe place. Stop traveling there. Stop vacationing there. Stop looking the other way and get radicalized. Get involved. Find ways to resist. </p><p>Whatever happens, don’t tell people to “just leave”. People are trapped. It costs money, time and resources that most don’t have to be able to relocate. Many countries would take you if you’re disabled or trans. Leaving is NOT the answer. </p><p>We have to recognize this as a powerful moment of intersectionality and work together to save as many lives as we can. </p><p>There are more of us than there are of them.</p><p>Also don’t be afraid to take breaks. You don’t need to be informed 24/7. You don’t need to fight every battle. Rest and recharge when needed.</p><p>And please wear a mask. It’s much easier to resist when you have your health. Include disabled people in the resistance effort. We have so much to offer. Please look back at what the Nazis did to education. </p><p>They wanted people uninformed and/or indoctrinated. They are anti-people. </p><p>Masks, such as N95, KN94, or P100 masks are used in industrial and medical settings to prevent harm to one's lungs.</p><p>They are also used by people who wish to protect their lungs from airborne pathogens, smoke, and allergens.</p><p>To ban masks is to put people at severe risk of harmful lung exposure to harmful smoke, often deadly airborne pathogens, and highly painful allergens.</p>

Every day it feels like another tool is taken away, accessibility further reduced & our agency stripped back. We are constantly told that we don’t deserve to survive. That we are acceptable losses. </p><p>My article from May of 2024 on ableism, eugenics and mask bans is a good example of why disabled people need your support. </p><p>We’re asking for solidarity. Broadwaybabyto<p>Covid is not over and masks are one of our best tools to avoid infection. Mask bans are ableist, discriminatory and would mark a return to ugly laws. </p><p>Anyone willing to shove someone in front of a train is not going to reconsider just because their mask is illegal. </p><p>Ritchie says “Wearing a mask for the purpose of committing crimes against innocent New Yorkers or for the purpose of intimidating & harassing Jewish students on college campuses should be prohibited by state law”</p><p>Who decides that? The police? People masking for health get caught in the crossfire </p><p>A criminal is not going to avoid committing a crime just because there’s an extra charge if they wear a mask while doing it. </p><p>Whereas disabled people will feel pushed out of public spaces due to the legitimate fear of being harassed, stopped or arrested for wearing a mask </p><p>People who drum up support for mask bans by talking about violent criminals and “pre covid bans” are ignoring many salient points:</p><p>- most criminals aren’t wearing a respirator <br>- sunglasses obscure identity better than masks<br>- pre covid no one CARED if you wore a medical mask<br>- they care now</p><p>People are so angry about mask mandates that they regularly lash out at maskers. They cough on us, spit at us and scream profanity & threats.</p><p>Painting maskers as criminals or “lunatics” (did not appreciate Ritchie’s sanest language) only encourages this behaviour. </p><p>It emboldens them.</p><p>Medical exemptions aren’t enough. They leave too many people behind. </p><p>Mask bans tell us that there’s something inherently wrong with protecting oneself from covid. They send a strong message that the pandemic is over. They WILL cost lives. </p><p>If you stopped masking - please start again now. Broadwaybabyto<p>My latest article is about the shooting of CEO Brian Thompson and how NYC Mayor Adams seems poised to use it as an excuse to bring in a ban on masks (which he’s wanted to do for awhile). </p><p>Mask bans are discriminatory, ableist and put lives at risk. </p><p>We are still IN an airborne pandemic. Everyone - whether disabled or not - should have the legal right to protect themselves from infection. </p><p>People need masks for all kinds of reasons. Pollution, wildfire smoke, allergies AND Covid. No one should be forced to risk their health because a necessary medical device has been criminalized for absolutely no reason. </p><p>Make no mistake - these bans won’t stop crime. Studies have shown that sunglasses obscure identity more effectively.</p><p>The only reason to ban masks is to pander to those on the right still angry about mask mandates - and to make it easier for the government to surveil its citizens. </p><p>Ironically those who screamed the loudest about freedom and bodily autonomy during mask mandates are eerily quiet about mask bans - despite the fact that they represent escalating fascism and government overreach. </p><p>We really are on our own. </p><p>Please - mask up. Do it in solidarity with disabled people who NEED masks in order to safely access public spaces. Do it to support the Covid aware people who just want to avoid infection. Do it to send a message to the government that you don’t believe anyone is expendable. Broadwaybabyto<p>NYC Mayor Eric Adams has again stated he supports a ban on masks</p><p>Disabled activists have been screaming about the dangers of mask bans since they were enacted in North Carolina. </p><p>We are still IN a pandemic. Broadwaybabyto<p>I’ve had people ask me why I’m concerned about mask bans given there’s a “medical exemption”</p><p>Mask bans are a return to ugly laws that will further isolate & exclude disabled people from society. </p><p>Medical exemptions are inadequate & leave many people behind (like healthy covid cautious people) </p><p>My article goes into it in more detail - but police are NOT medical professionals. It shouldn’t be up to them to determine who’s “medically justified” in wearing a mask</p><p>Many of us have invisible illnesses & struggle to convince our doctors to take us seriously </p><p>What hope do we have with police? </p><p>Moreover - disabled people don’t exist in a vacuum. We have friends, family and caregivers who we rely on to mask to protect us. They don’t qualify under most medical exemptions.</p><p>If you’re non disabled and want to stay that way? If you’re trying to avoid covid? That also doesn’t qualify.</p><p>These bans represent escalating fascism. They’re preying on people’s hatred for the disabled as well as their anger over mask mandates and covid policies. </p><p>The best way to push back? Wear a mask. Right now. </p><p>Call local lawmakers & tell them you won’t visit any state or county with a ban. </p><p>The Governor of North Carolina vetoed the bill - but the senate super majority overrode his veto. </p><p>Right after the mask ban bill passed - a woman with stage 4 cancer was accosted for masking. </p><p>The man called her a liberal, identified himself as a conservative & coughed on her.</p><p>What’s even more appalling - is that if you read the language of the North Carolina bill - it says any OCCUPANT of a public space can legally demand you remove your mask. </p><p>Its essentially deputizing the public to enforce mask bans - and designed to dissuade people from masking in the first place</p><p>Given these bans have been pushed by Republicans - and JD Vance spearheaded the federal ban on mask mandates - it’s prudent to fight back now while we still can. </p><p>Wearing a mask in public shows solidarity. It helps normalize them as a medical device. It was painfully obvious when the great unmasking occurred that many people on BOTH sides of the aisle didn’t care about the “vulnerable”. Didn’t care about community or protecting their neighbours. Didn’t care about anything other than their own ability to go to brunch, travel, socialize and get ‘back to normal.’</p><p>I’m not saying people should have shuttered inside their homes forever. None of us are. But they should have kept masking. There was no reason to stop. Respirators are highly effective at stopping the spread of Covid. The vast majority of people CAN wear them. We have mask blocs all over the world to provide masks to people who can’t afford them.
