The hot, dry air means that summer thunderstorms are often very isolated with high cloud bases, which creates perfect conditions for viewing and photographing cloud to ground lightning bolts. Paul KnightlyThis is an image that is entirely the product of being in the right place at the right time. I was driving between Northwest Arkansas and Kansas City in May 2018 when I saw a small thunderstorm form to the west of me in southern Missouri. I pulled off the highway and onto a nearby dirt road and setup my camera and tripod, looking to try my luck at capturing a lightning bolt or two. No sooner did I have my camera setup and began taking a few test shots, a large cloud-to-ground bolt landed on the horizon with the shutter open.
