I'm looking at setting up #alarmo to replace an ADT system. The software side looks easy, but I'd like a hardware recommendation for a keypad. I'd prefer #zigbee but I have a #zwave mesh too.

Right now I'm thinking of a Ring v2 for the keypad and Aquara contact sensors for the doors and windows.

Hmm, there's no way to export a #HomeAssistant calendar in an ical format? I found an integration with a single release and poor documentation.

There also doesn't seem to be a way to add events to a synced calendar via CalDAV?

I'm trying to put the garbage collection schedules that are generated in Home Assistant based on Holidays on a shared calendar.

I'm close to getting my #VoiceAssistant working under #HomeAssistant. But suddenly my debian docker host can't resolve DNS. Just last night I did a docker pull and everything was fine. Now docker pull results in an error.

No biggie. Normally I'd just reboot it. But I can hear my teenager playing online games with his friends, and if I reboot that system and the pihole doesn't come back, he will kill me. So I will wait until he takes a break and go play #Civ7 instead.

Ha. #HomeAssistant project today was connecting my heat pump hot water heater. Hit a wiring issue, but figured it out pretty quick. Same as ( https://github.com/esphome-econet/esphome-econet/discussions/271 ).

And it came up and... alerted me that I need to clean it's filter. Nice.

I’m working on extending the template engine with some new functions, filters, and tests, for example:

flatten(list_of_lists) – Flattens nested lists into a single list
combine(dict1, dict2, ...) – Merges multiple dictionaries together

Now, I need your input!

What template functions, filters, or tests would make your automations easier?
What repetitive Jinja gymnastics do you find yourself doing over and over?

Over the past few days, I "channeled" my inner nerd into building an automated radiation detection system using open-source tools.

The device combines an ESP32 running #ESPHome for sensor data collection, my #HomeAssistant for centralized smart home integration, and #NodeRED for automating hourly Fediverse updates via a bot account

Technical Breakdown:

Sensor: Radiation D-v1.1 (CAJOE) - radiation detector

Connectivity: ESP32 transmits via Wi-Fi to Home Assistant

Case: #3dPrinting the case (photo) - base is black and the lid is blue and shows the logo of "Fallout" (pc game/ TV series)

Automation: Node-RED flow formats data into ActivityPub messages

Decentralized Sharing: Posts include μSv/h readings

While this started as a hardware tinkering project, recent global events — nuclear rhetoric in conflict zones, aging power plants, and insufficient transparency in environmental monitoring — made me realize decentralized citizen science could play a crucial role.

Open-source tools eliminate single points of failure, and Fediverse integration ensures censorship-resistant data sharing.
