Jennie Batchelor<p>Had some really lovely feedback today from an article I wrote for Embroidery Canada (published a few weeks back) about domestic embroidery in the eighteenth century and the patterns in the Lady’s Magazine. Still have to pinch myself that I get to work in this area and connect with so many talented makers. <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/needlework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>needlework</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/embroidery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>embroidery</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/dresshistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dresshistory</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/womenshistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>womenshistory</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/georgian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>georgian</span></a></p>
Jennie Batchelor<p>How gorgeous is this? Love this recreation by Katherine Garrett Kirk of one of my favourite patterns from the Lady’s Magazine. This one is from 1775. It is for a work bag and you can see it and 200 others on my website Patterns of Perfection. <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/embroidery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>embroidery</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/georgian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>georgian</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/needlework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>needlework</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/ladysmag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ladysmag</span></a> <a href="https://c18.masto.host/tags/dresshistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dresshistory</span></a></p>
Sami Kelsh is a tired bear<p>I just wanted to paint these sweet fellows in some hot 12th century looks, as you do, so I did. Sami Kelsh is a tired bear<p>I did these little fashion plates a few months ago, but there wasn’t a good time to post them together because wowee this lil painter got real busy. Sami Kelsh is a tired bear<p>Day 30 of Stream Ink is Pattern!<br>Printed textiles have been around for a VERY long time, and they had an Absolute Moment in 18th century Europe and North America, with all manner of lovely printed cottons, from complex multi-coloured florals if you could afford them, to simpler, single-colour patterns. This little rat lady has selected a charming calico with which to make a nice new jacket in her mantua-maker’s workshop.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/cute" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cute</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/whimsical" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>whimsical</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/18thcentury" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>18thcentury</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/dresshistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dresshistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/fashionhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fashionhistory</span></a></p>
Rebecca Olds<p>Anyone interested in how 18th century staymakers (a specialism within the tailoring trade) drafted patterns -- I've filmed a series on how I do it, having studied with The School of Historical Dress and the Tailor Shop at Colonial Williamsburg. It's a very different way of looking at pattern drafting, especially in terms of engineering a shape on a squishy human body ... after several years of study, I think I'm getting the hang of it.</p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/0gAV3aIZSpE" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/0gAV3aIZSpE</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/18thcentury" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>18thcentury</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dresshistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dresshistory</span></a></p>
Amy Clukey (she/her)<p>Any scholar of <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/MaterialHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MaterialHistory</span></a> or <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/DressHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DressHistory</span></a> or <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/FiberArts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FiberArts</span></a> can tell you the value of antique textiles, and how most humanities scholars can tell you about how archives conceal as much as they reveal. </p><p>Well, the same is true of recreation. Looking at an object, even using an object, cannot give you the kinds of knowledge that comes from making and remaking. </p><p>That work is hard as fuck and there is so much failure along the way. So, so much failure, and so much reward. </p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Quilts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Quilts</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/quilting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>quilting</span></a></p>

Alex M Bright<p>Apparently there’s a historical dress and fashion community out there on Mastodon, so I thought I’d share the traditional viking apron dress I made to cosplay as a historical Loki/Sylvie. The shift and apron are linen, drafted by myself and hand sewn. The embroidery is hand sewn as well (I hate metallic floss). The pouch is hand knitted and wet-felted. I still have to finish making the circlet (with horns). <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/dresshistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dresshistory</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/marvel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marvel</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/cosplay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cosplay</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sewing</span></a></p>
