Martin Rundkvist
When Copernicus and later Galileo put the Sun at the centre of the observable universe, they said something shocking about those wandering stars.

WE ARE *ON* A SIXTH PLANET. THEY HAVE BEEN UP THERE ALL THE TIME IN PLAIN SIGHT AND WE HAVEN'T REALISED THAT EARTH *IS* A PLANET. Martin Rundkvist
The Copernican revolution in our worldview is often phrased that we realised that the Earth moves around the Sun. But there's another important way to look at this.

For many thousands of years, people had known that there are five "stars" that move around dramatically relative to the fixed ones. A few of the five are exceptionally bright, notably Mars and Venus. The ancient Greeks called them "wandering stars", planetes asteres -- planets. 1/2

#history #astronomy #cosmology #space

Nate Gaylinn
How did life get started?

I just read a really cool paper, revisiting a classic origin-of-life experiment. Like Miller and Urey before them, these researchers simulated a tiny pond on ancient earth, and struck it with "lightning."

They confirmed this produces biochemicals, but this time they used advanced microscopy to show it also produces tiny bubbles that look surprisingly lifelike on their own, and could serve as shelters for protolife.

Awesome finding! This really could have been important for life's origins (though, to be properly alive, the protocell would need to be able to make its own vesicle, and divide it). It's a little disheartening, though, as this new evidence makes the search for microbial fossils that much harder.

https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2413816122

#science #life #biology #cosmology #xenobiology

🇨🇦 Michael Porter 🇨🇦
I'm poking through Stephen Hawking's "A Briefer History of Time," and near the beginning he states "The ancient Chinese built stone towers so they could have a closer look at the stars."

I would love to incorporate this into my talks about the history and development of astronomy, but I'm having trouble tracking down the idea elsewhere on the internet.

I have a healthy skepticism about claims made about areas in which an author is not an authority. Hawking was a giant when it came to modern cosmology and black holes, etc. but that doesn't mean I'll take his word about some historical nugget that he might have heard in a bar that one time in university.

If anyone could point me to a reference, I would greatly appreciate it.

While we're on the subject, a little later he says:

“Ptolemy’s model provided a fairly accurate system for predicting the positions of heavenly bodies in the sky. But in order to predict these positions correctly, Ptolemy had to make an assumption that the Moon followed a path that sometimes brought it twice as close to the Earth as at other times. And that meant that the Moon ought sometimes to appear twice as big as at other times! Ptolemy recognized this flaw, but nevertheless his model was generally, although not universally, accepted.”

This doesn't make sense to me - The motion of the Moon in a geocentric model is pretty much the same as in a heliocentric model. It goes around the Earth, and there is no retrograde motion. The distance wouldn't vary that much, either way. Did Hawking mess up?

#Astronomy #History #Cosmology

Zack Weinberg
today in random #cosmology factoids:

We don't have a good explanation for why the observable universe contains lots of matter and no antimatter. The standard attempts to explain this all make predictions that haven't panned out.

An intriguing *nonstandard* possibility is to suggest that at the big bang, all the antimatter went *the opposite direction in time* from the matter. (I say "opposite direction" rather than "backward" because it's strictly a perspective thing. Intelligent observers on the antimatter side of the bang would perceive the bang to be in their past, and time advancing in the direction of greater entropy, just as we do.)

There's a strong theoretical reason why this makes sense: it allows the whole universe (antimatter and matter both) to obey something called "CPT symmetry." But the problem is, there's no way to observe the "other side" of the big bang, so this hypothesis makes no testable predictions...

... or so I thought. <https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.08930> proposes that a fully-CPT-symmetric universe would provide a candidate *within the Standard Model* for dark matter, namely a "sterile right-handed neutrino", and that in turn leads to several concrete predictions (all involving neutrinos, IIUC) that are within reach of experiment.

Ronak | ‘In Search of Starlight’ out now 💫
Thinking about the discovery of the Gravitational Wave Background in 2023. In less than 10 years, gravitational-wave astronomy has already made so much progress! It may help us bring to light things that happened even before the universe was 380,000 years old. Science leads.

#Cosmology #Astronomy #Physics #Science
