I like to display them, in part, as a lesson to other weeds that might be thinking about germinating (just don't). NorfolkGreg<p>So, having used the word <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a>, suddenly I have a new set of people favouriting and boosting my toots.</p><p>Why did it never occur to me that people might also be interested in my <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/composting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>composting</span></a> activities too! I've only been sharing my photographs on <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/family" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>family</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/WhatsApp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WhatsApp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Groups" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Groups</span></a> up till now. </p><p>These were taken on 11 November during my second morning clearing leaves from around the house.</p>
tickfoot<p>If you're trying to get started with <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/composting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>composting</span></a> all you need is</p><p>- an open space on the ground<br>- a lot of carbon (wood chips, cardboard, old hay, dried leaves)<br>- some nitrogen (food waste, grass clippings, coffee grounds, manure, etc)<br>- to keep the pile moist (moisture is the foundation of decomposition)<br>- to flip it occasionally as to not let it go anaerobic (the "good guys" need air and "bad guys" make for the nasty version of compost you don't want near your food gardens)</p><p>You need way more carbon than you think you do. No carbon? Go for a <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/vermicomposting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vermicomposting</span></a> bin instead. Eisenia fetida get on real well with simple paper waste and food scraps. You can make a bin with old buckets or tote bins. </p><p>This is high level but a good place to start. Just make a pile and learn from it. I might have to go for a smaller trash because of how much less I throw out now.</p>
CaledonMoneypit 🇨🇦<p>Done for today and made some decent progress. Gardens look so bare once the perennials and weeds are gone. This shade garden is usually overflowing with Hostas and Astilbe. <br>Compost bin is at max capacity, so I'll top this off with shredded leaves and grass clippings after my final mowing of the season. Andy<p>Right, my bokashi bran has arrived so I've started that going again. With the worms settling in, food waste is now near-zero.</p><p>I just need a few hundred litres of compost to start my buckets going, and get the test garlic in for winter.
