ESO<p>Supermassive black hole caught playing with its food!</p><p>The supermassive black hole at the centre of galaxy NGC 4945 is swallowing huge amounts of matter. Yet, contrary to a black hole’s all-consuming reputation, our Very Large Telescope (VLT) has caught it blowing out powerful winds of material. </p><p>This cone-shaped wind is shown in red in the inset image. CosmicRami<p>Whooooaaaa! The new <a href="https://aus.social/tags/JWST" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JWST</span></a> image is so good! So much physics going on — physics Einstein himself thought about!</p><p>This is called an Einstein Ring. When a massive foreground galaxy (in this case, an elliptical galaxy) warps the space-time around it, light from behind it bends in our direction.</p><p>The JWST caught this fantastic example, where the background spiral galaxy is getting warped into our view. Dr. John Barentine FRAS<p>New JWST image just dropped.</p><p>This object is called Herbig-Haro 49/50. It's the outflow of a still-forming star hidden from view to the lower right of the orangish cone of material oriented diagonally in this image.</p><p>As stars form they eject excess matter in the direction of their poles of rotation. That material encounters the interstellar medium in the vicinity and lights up in response. ESO<p>Using ALMA, in which we are a partner, astronomers have found oxygen in the most distant known galaxy!</p><p>The galaxy, known as JADES-GS-z14-0, is so far away that we see it as it was when the Universe was less than 300 million years old, about 2% of its present age.</p><p>Researchers had thought that this early on the Universe was still too young to have galaxies ripe with heavy elements. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Clara Sousa-Silva: A couple of weeks ago, I went to look at climate monitoring data that’s collected from ground-based monitoring stations, including one on Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Mauna Loa is the mountain next to Mauna Kea where my telescopes are. We use the Mauna Loa data, which is NOAA Climate Data Record program data, to obtain information about what the sky looks like so that we can remove it from our own data.</p><p>But all the data was gone. So I contacted my colleagues who are climate scientists, who basically do the same work as I do, but instead of doing it on atmospheres beyond Earth, they do it for Earth. They started panicking because lots of data was missing, specifically all the CO₂ data was missing.</p><p>We then learned that there had been some scheduled maintenance of some databases, but even after the databases came back online, there was still stuff missing intermittently. At one point, a lot of the greenhouse gases data was missing. Then they came back, but not CO₂. Then CO₂ came back.</p><p>I contacted my colleagues who use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data, and they reported the same thing — their repositories were not accessible. I found out from my colleagues who work at NOAA that there hadn’t been a centralized effort to safeguard this data, which means the only access people have is through online databases. ESO<p>🚨 2024 YR4 asteroid impact update!</p><p>New observations of 2024 YR4 conducted with ESO’s Very Large Telescope and facilities around the world have all but ruled out an impact of the <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/asteroid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>asteroid</span></a> with our planet. The asteroid has been closely monitored in the past couple of months as its odds of impacting Earth in 2032 rose to around 3%, the highest impact probability ever reached for a sizable asteroid. Now we can measure their weather with incredible detail.</p><p>And WASP-121b, a hot gas giant orbiting a star 900 light-years away, has a fascinating multi-layered weather pattern, now unveiled in 3D with ESO's Very Large Telescope.
