Pit firing connects us to over 30,000 years of shared human artistry.
Once a year, I return to this ancient technique, shaping clay, and letting fire and smoke complete the story. Honoring the legacy of those before me, I’m reminded how art endures across time.

In A.D. 79, a man who died in Mount Vesuvius' eruption near Pompeii had a rare transformation: His brain seemingly turned into glass. Scientists haven’t agreed on the reason, but a team of researchers offers this explanation: The pyroclastic flows must have been immediately preceded by a superheated cloud of ash that first rapidly heated and then rapidly cooled the man's brain as it dissipated. Scary thought. @LiveScience has more:
A 500 year old puzzle jug (1475-1550) (broken) next to my unfinished reconstruction. The question is: how do you drink from this jug? The cross section shows that there's a tunnel hidden in the handle and the neck of the jug. If you close the hole inside the handle (arrow) you can drink without spilling. The last image shows a complete puzzle jug. Same time, same production place (Raeren).

I think I'm liking my new method for enhancing very weathered petroglyphs. I'm using the combination drawn and parametric masks in a second Darktable exposure module instance. First I paint in where I want the mask. Then I adjust it using the parametric functions. Then I lighten the faded petoglyphs. What do you think? Does this image look too manipulated or does it look fairly natural?
