Sarah IO<p>i'm always extra-incensed by the extreme disconnect my entire queer theories or sexuality studies classes operate from around covid! we can talk about hiv/aids, informed consent, eugenics, etc all the while everyone in the room is maskless &amp; there is always at least one coughing someone was talking about feeling safe in queer spaces w/their multiple marginalized identities, which is very real! but even still it's ironically not inclusive to further marginalized folks. so vexed by the incessant disconnect so i had to share this:</p><p>folks really gotta start questioning how radical they really are because not being covid cautious during this mass disabling event is at odds with being inclusive, accessible, intentional, community oriented, creating safe space, practicing consent, siding with the marginalized.</p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/covid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>covid</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/leftist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>leftist</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/leftists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>leftists</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/covidisairborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>covidisairborne</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/coviding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>coviding</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/covidisntover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>covidisntover</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/airborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airborne</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/measles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>measles</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/norovirus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>norovirus</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/rsv" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rsv</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/h5n1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>h5n1</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/airborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airborne</span></a></p>

Broadwaybabyto<p>Disabled and Covid cautious people have been sounding alarm bells about H5N1 for months. We are desperately trying to warn others to pay attention - but no one is listening. </p><p>The first severe human case was announced today in Louisiana.</p><p>Where are we headed &amp; why don’t people care?</p><p>First - I think it’s important to note that Canada had its first severe human case a few weeks ago. </p><p>A 16 year old BC teen was in the ICU and had no confirmed exposure to infected animals/birds. </p><p>No updates are being given on his condition (and public health has confirmed none will be provided).</p><p>Louisiana’s case appears to be getting slightly more media attention - likely because it was announced on the same day as a State of Emergency in California and the first human case in Wisconsin. </p><p>Despite all these concerning events - governments are doing virtually nothing to prepare for the possibility of another pandemic. </p><p>In fact - the new nominee for HHS RFK Jr recently posted a photo of his meal which included raw milk (among other high risk items) </p><p>Farm workers were provided with FREE PPE months ago in an effort to prevent spread from animals to humans - the majority refused to use it. </p><p>After all - we can’t “live in fear”. </p><p>Anti mask rhetoric combined with public health failures is once again costing lives.</p><p>Many animals have been culled already - and we don’t know if the BC teen survived. </p><p>We’ve got a population that’s been allowing themselves to be repeatedly infected with Covid for the last five years - leading to possible severe immune system damage. </p><p>People no longer believe in taking any precautions - masks and vaccines are seen as “weak”. </p><p>They praise themselves for “not living in fear” while throwing away their health and risking the health of those around them.</p><p>The incoming administration has proven they have no interest in fixing public health - in fact they seem intent on undermining it at every turn.</p><p>They’ve talked of removing access to certain vaccines, abortion pills, contraceptives, affordable healthcare and more.</p><p>They promote harmful narratives about “wellness” that suggest a person can ignore all sound science and medical advice without consequence. </p><p>Drink raw milk, avoid vaccines, inject yourself with bleach and let the “health” wash over you. </p><p>I’m gutted that more people aren’t pushing back. Our public health agencies and leaders are failing us over and over - and because people can’t bring themselves to face the reality that our 2019 “normal” is gone - they’re swallowing the comfortable lies with a smile.</p><p>We must change course. Too many lives have been lost already. Millions upon millions are disabled. Many of the deaths and disability were preventable if people would simply accept that our world has changed and we must change with it. </p><p>We don’t need lockdowns. You don’t have to stop living your life. You need to stop accepting covid infections as inevitable. Wear a respirator. Clean and ventilate the air. Stay home when you’re sick. </p><p>Demand better from leaders. Refuse to participate in the ruse any longer.</p><p>Maskers are NOT the sheep. Everyone who stopped masking did so at the urging of government leaders. They were told it was time to “go back to normal”. </p><p>They were instructed that “only then vulnerable” needed to worry and it was ok to leave them by the wayside.</p><p>The problem is - it wasn’t true. Covid is a threat to everyone. Bird flu is as well. The “wayside” is growing exponentially every day because people outright refuse to take measures to safeguard their health. </p><p>The few people still masking aren’t doing it for fun. They’re trying to stay alive. </p><p>It’s time to join us. We will help you. You don’t have to be the lone masker. There’s many people who are sick and tired of being sick and tired. They WANT to mask back up but peer pressure and ableism are powerful drugs. </p><p>The more of us masking - the easier it will be to normalize masks as a public health tool. We will lessen the effects of peer pressure and break chains of transmission. </p><p>We can and will literally save lives. </p><p>It’s time. Demand more transparency from government and better access to honest and accurate data about the risks of COVID and H5N1. </p><p>Wear a mask and clean the air. Refuse to relegate people to the wayside - and you just might avoid ending up there yourself.</p><p><a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/H5N1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>H5N1</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/birdflu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdflu</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/pandemic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pandemic</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/airborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airborne</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/WearAMask" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WearAMask</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/sarscov2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sarscov2</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/longcovid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>longcovid</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/covidisairborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>covidisairborne</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/covidisnotover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>covidisnotover</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/eugenics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eugenics</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/ableism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ableism</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/disability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disability</span></a></p>

Broadwaybabyto<p>Influencer Dominique Brown Dies of Food Allergy at 34 </p><p>Anaphylaxis needs to be taken much more seriously than it is.</p><p>Epi is great - but it’s only buying you time. Biphasic reactions can be lethal. </p><p>Also - especially if you have MCAS - make sure to learn the various ways anaphylaxis can present.</p><p>It doesn’t always involve the airway.</p><p>This was (in my opinion) a preventable death. It was an egregious disregard for Dominique’s life to suggest she take photos before going to get medical care. </p><p>Even “if” you think your reaction isn’t progressing quickly - it could change in an instant. </p><p>You should never delay medical attention</p><p>If you’re new to anaphylaxis and/or new to MCAS - I highly recommend learning the various ways it can impact your body. </p><p>I didn’t realize I was having anaphylaxis the first time it happened to me. I thought it was the flu. </p><p>I had diarrhea &amp; vomiting, sore throat, fever and bone pain.</p><p>I finally went to ER after three days of suffering not because I suspected anaphylaxis - but because my throat was so sore I couldn’t keep fluids down.</p><p>The triage nurse took one look in my airway, stabbed me with an epi pen and whisked me into a code room.</p><p>My “sore throat” was actually swelling</p><p>My vomiting and diarrhea was classic GI anaphylaxis - and I was also having significant cardiac symptoms. </p><p>Thankfully I got medical care in time - and the team who treated me explained what to look for in the future.</p><p>Many of us think of wheezing, hives, hoarseness and throat closure when we picture an anaphylactic reaction. </p><p>In reality - it can spare the airway AND the skin. It can impact your gut, your heart and your reproductive organs. </p><p>In fact - my doctors can actually tell when I’m going into anaphylaxis by the changes in my EKG (highly recommend reading about Kounis Syndrome if your MCAS causes cardiac issues)</p><p>When it comes to anaphylaxis - treat early &amp; get to hospital. Make sure you always have an epi pen (or two) with you and check regularly to make sure they haven’t expired. </p><p>If you’re unsure if you’re in anaphylaxis - go to ER to be certain. </p><p>Had I waited much longer my throat would have closed</p><p>Lastly - take people’s allergies seriously. In MCAS we don’t always know what the trigger will be - but when people do know what they’re allergic to - we need to be cautious and ensure they aren’t exposed</p><p>If we took allergies more seriously - Dominique would still be with us </p><p>For more on idiopathic anaphylaxis and the unique ways it can impact people with MCAS - check out my introduction to MCAS article: <a href="https://www.disabledginger.com/p/when-youre-allergic-to-everything" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">disabledginger.com/p/when-your</span><span class="invisible">e-allergic-to-everything</span></a></p><p>For more on Dominique’s death: <a href="https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/influencer-dominique-brown-dies-of-food-allergy-at-age-34/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/</span><span class="invisible">news/influencer-dominique-brown-dies-of-food-allergy-at-age-34/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/mcas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mcas</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/allergies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allergies</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/foodallergies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>foodallergies</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/airborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airborne</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/anaphylactic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anaphylactic</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/mastcells" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mastcells</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/epi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>epi</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/anaphylacticshock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anaphylacticshock</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/chronicillness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chronicillness</span></a></p>

Broadwaybabyto<p>There’s a teenager in the ICU in BC with bird flu. </p><p>As news spreads- I’m seeing increasing number of people ask: </p><p>“what health conditions did he have? Was he overweight?”</p><p>Can we PLEASE not do this again? A 16 year old is fighting for his life. Stop looking for fault and blame.</p><p>Just like with Covid - people are trying to tell themselves there must be “something wrong” with that individual to make them more vulnerable. </p><p>They must be in the “other” category. They’re “expendable.”</p><p>It needs to stop. </p><p>First off - no one is expendable. We’ve been dealing with this horrible “othering” for five years. Disabled and chronically ill people are exhausted. </p><p>Second - bird flu is no joke. It can be quite serious. </p><p>Instead of looking for fault with the victim so YOU can feel better about your own personal risk - we should be taking steps right now to minimize spread. </p><p>We should be demanding transparency from the government on the severity of the threat. </p><p>We should have mandatory masking in healthcare. We should be cleaning the air and educating the public on the benefits of respirators and how to use them properly.</p><p>We should agree to stop asking ableist questions. Stop blaming the victim. Health is a temporary state. Death and disability can and do befall everyone.</p><p>When the first question someone asks when they hear of a person dying or being disabled is “what comorbids did they have?” all they’re doing is trying to cling on to the comfortable lie.</p><p>They’re trying to make sure they can keep telling themselves everything is fine, they’re the exception, the threat doesn’t apply to them. </p><p>As long as we continue to take that selfish and faulty approach - viruses keep winning. </p><p>Everyone can’t be the exception. Once people realize that and start protecting their health and the health of others - we will ALL be much better off.</p><p><a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/first-presumptive-avian-flu-case-in-humans-1.7381342" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">cbc.ca/news/canada/british-col</span><span class="invisible">umbia/first-presumptive-avian-flu-case-in-humans-1.7381342</span></a></p><p><a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/avianflu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>avianflu</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/birdfu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdfu</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/H5N1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>H5N1</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/keepmasksinhealthcare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>keepmasksinhealthcare</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/maskup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maskup</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/respirators" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>respirators</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/airborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airborne</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/n95" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>n95</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/covidisairborne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>covidisairborne</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/eugenics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eugenics</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/ableism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ableism</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/discrimination" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>discrimination</span></a> <a href="https://zeroes.ca/tags/disabilityrights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disabilityrights</span></a></p>

Broadwaybabyto<p>Today - of all days - the CDC drops a 30 second video on bird flu. Which of course makes no mention of masking. I can’t upload it for some reason so will link the website at the bottom. </p><p>The good news? Masks work against H5N1. Respirators are even better. </p><p>Public health has been virtually non existent since they decided to embrace denial, toss the vulnerable aside and go full speed back to normal.</p><p>Unfortunately - it CAN get worse.<br>Science denying anti-vaxxers in charge of US health &amp; pandemic response is bad news for everyone</p><p>Viruses don't stop at the border. They don't care where you're from, what political "side" you're on or how badly you want 2019 back.</p><p>They want to infect as many people as quickly as possible.
